Weekend Photo Fun 8-30-19-??

Photos of downtown Altoona under construction. The three structures closest to the camera are resin structures from Chooch. They were made over ten years ago, and only in very limited quantities. They have been sitting in boxes under my layout for years awaiting painting and installation. My friend Mark Vinski did a masterful job of cleaning up, assembling, and painting the castings. Windows are still to be installed in the second building from the right once I finish weathering it:

Just after dawn in the city. The streets are empty......are those milk cans waiting to be picked up full, or are they empties.....I don’t know.....

While at Walt Disney World for our annual WDW vacation.   I opened this thread while drinking my morning coffee at the Pop Century Resort.  I recalled that in the resort lobby, Lionel is represented in the 1950's memorabilia wall displays.    I've probably posted this in previous years.   But here it is again.

This is my Canadian VIA Rail train that I custom painted MTH passenger cars in the VIA blue colors. When VIA was created from Canadian Pacific and Canadian National Railway this is the paint scheme that they did on the CN cars, all of which are now retired. The CP cars were the Budd Silver fleet that is still used today on VIA Rail. The engine is an old Atlas 1970's model with the motor removed and LED lights added. The B unit is a Williams that powers the train. A couple of photos show my Silver Budd VIA train these were old Aluminum extrusions created in the 1960's with hand milled windows. Running on the club garden railway, a G scale CP Canadian runs on the larger garden railway over head and another shot shows the New York Central Live steam engine one of several engines running that day giving train rides in the park.

After trying to decide if I should match the trim or the wall, my wife & kids suggested I match the trim, so I painted the board trim white this week 











Also did some 'behind the scenes' work and added feeder wires to the track. On the plan for this week is to wire up the gateman & crossing signals.

NS SD70ACe 1159 is seen leading 189 past the remains of the Appalachian Power coal fired plant in Glen Lyn, VA



NS GP38-2 5208 is seen at the Juniata shops after getting a new low nose Admiral cab & other improvements


NS SD40E 6312 (ex CR SD50 6729) shoves eastbound 590 past dilapidated AR tower. With the PRR signals gone, the tower is one of the only remaining signs of the line's heritage. 


A pair of CSX GEVOs pop out of the old C&O Big Bend Tunnel in Talcott, WV with eastbound oil train K410. Big Bend Tunnel is the site of the John Henry "The Steel Driving Man" legend. 


Time & progress finally caught up with the PRR signals at CP WING over the weekend. This will go down as my favorite shot at this location. The CR/RDG heritage duo lead 25Z past the Pennsy 'lollipops' on a nice Spring afternoon.

How neat would it be to be able to buy a complete cab like that?

Many months ago I got interested in finding a Lionel Scout LionChief Set.  I found it curiously difficult to find one (except for the gouger who lists the individual components on ebay for ridiculous prices).  I finally found one for a fair price, and also found the expansion set of three cars (plus the extra track) in like new condition for a fair price as well.  Very toy like, not a strong puller, huge loco tender gap, etc., but for all the warts, there is just something about this toy set that calls out to me.  Happy to have it in my collection!

KJ, this is one of the best Atlas old tool resurrections I've ever seen. Powering the William's B was the way to go. Nice train!!

How about some articulation?

Not sure but this is probably Cumberland. This enlargement is part of a group taken by Dad on an excursion East out of Pittsburgh behind an EM1.

I still remember the constant rain of cinders from that big engine working hard up the long hill to sand Patch.

Great choice for the trim. It makes the layout stand out even more. I always thought keeping natural wood or painting benchwork black to hide it was the way to go but you have proven that wrong in my opinion. Great job.

I am thinking the same thing. Was thinking of painting the fascia and everything below black to diminish it's visual impact but now not so sure.
