Union Station in New Haven, Connecticut is a hub of rail activity. It was the eighth busiest Amtrak Station in fiscal year 2023 with 792,634 Amtrak riders and also serves Metro-North Railroad (72 miles to Grand Central Terminal, NY), CT Rail (62 miles to Hartford, CT – Springfield, MA) and Shoreline East (50 miles to New London, CT). The building was completed in 1920 following a fire that destroyed the previous station in 1918.

The New York New Haven & Hartford Railroad was created in 1872 by the merger of the New York & New Haven and the Hartford & New Haven railroads, after which the NYNH&HRR was referred to as “The Consolidated” in Connecticut. It completed its through route between New York City and Boston in 1892, and became a principal means of passenger and freight transportation between the two cities until its merger into Penn Central in 1969.

I often used to take Metro-North to New Haven, have breakfast in the station, take a walk around town, and watch trains come and go. I did that again this week for the first time in a long while...

The station’s waiting room has elegant wood benches reminiscent of the days when The Merchants Limited and The Yankee Clipper plied the rails between New York City and Boston. Atop the benches are glass cases displaying models of famous trains of The New Haven Railroad donated by the Lawrence Scripps Wilkinson Foundation of Detroit, Michigan in 2002. Wilkinson graduated from Yale College, a short walk from the station, in 1950.

I took the photographs and videos on August 27, 2024.

City of New Orleans at Spencer Maid Rite

City of New Orleans is rerouted over Milwaukee Road tracks through Spencer due to major flooding on a lazy summer day in 1960.  Passengers were allowed time to run across the street to the Spencer Maid Rite to get a loose meat hamburger before continuing their journey to New Orleans.

Great job on the church!  You really captured the look and feel of the real one.  It really enhances my enjoyment of a model scene when it looks realistic enough for me to "relive" a memory or recollection of when I was there.  Your scenes accomplish that.
