WEEKEND PHOTO FUN 9-11-15-??

I dusted off and am running the MTH tinplate trains I bought four years ago.

No real work this week so just an overview of the overall layout.

Minions junction

Working on a project for up coming model train shows that I display at.

Had a Lionel gateman that wore out from the kids pushing the button many times at shows.

Thought I would upgrade it.

Replacing the piston with the Tortoise, a slow motion geared switch motor that has relays on it. Adding a moving figure up front that rotates as well and a rod out the front when it moves with the figures will throw a signal arm.

Will use the Tortoise relay contacts to power red/green lights.

Using a spring loaded switch center off and DPDT to allow the kids to control it. With the slower motor speed at about 9 volts DC think the display will last longer then Lionel stock set up where the figure bangs in and out at high speed.

Slow train week at home for me after a busy display week. I did find a "new " old picture of my layout in 1985-86. A true "early modern, pre-digital" layout.

I have a short accessory video to post.....but I have to wait for my wifi to go back up at work......later, I hope (or it will be a disaster trying to see patients without my IPad!)

Football is back on, the temps are getting lower & it looks like train season is officially here!

Did some painting & other work that you really can't see in photos this week. One thing that is noticeable would be the ground covering I put down on some parts. I had some left over roof shingles & put some down to just it some texture till I get around to doing ballast & ground cover. I also cut in one of the crossovers.

worked a little on the engine terminal - added an old tank car body & as a fuel tank & put up a backdrop & painted it

westbound ethanol w/ some Heritage leading-

picked up a non powered unit to run w/ my other Geeps on the locals -

NS ES44DC 7632 leads Jersey bound 18N over the Harrisburg Line in Hummelstown, PA

CSAO MA1 heads back to Manville yard w/ a rebuilt ex CR GP38 on the point in Piscataway, NJ . NS 5637 is ex NS GP38 2925, ex CR/PC 7873

NS SD90MAC 7279 (ex UP 3510, 8051) leads 22V through central NJ on the Lehigh Line-

A 2014 Christmas Layout memory

I know that I am a broken record, but I HAVE to say it again: the pharmacy is because my daughter is a pharmacist and the dental stuff is because my DIL is a dental hygienist - if you look at that red 'sign' on the roof with her picture, that red 'sign' is a tooth.  Cool, huh?

Retro Spencer! That fuzzy thing across the center had me confused for a moment!

Here are pictures of the last engines I ran on the TMB2 before the club layout was dismantled;

The Milwaukee Road's Morning Hiawatha drifts across the Mississippi River valley toward Spencer.  Passengers in the beaver tail observation car are enjoying the view but are getting annoyed that the river is dry and there's no vegetation on the banks.

Actually I took this pic the other day because I am going to be opening up the layout for an open house tour this November for the local NMRA chapter.  Instead of answering the same questions all day about my future plans I commissioned the art club here at school to sketch the layout (they needed a picture to work off of) and add all the future areas and plans that I am going to incorporate over time.  The kids are excited to do it since I will be providing the club with pizza at their next art club meeting.

It works like the day I got it, Christmas 1959......a banner year.....got the 3534 Aquarium car and 3361 lumber car.......still have them both....I must have been real good that year!

Here's a few views of a scratchbuilt passenger shelter and platform I am in the process of building.  They are models of the structures once found along the westbound tracks of the PRR Middle Division at Duncannon, PA.  Photos of the prototype may be found on pages 16-19 of "Pennsy Facilities, Vol 8" published by Morning Sun  Books.  I did not have any plans, and had to work strictly off of the photographs.  Work is about 85-90% complete.  The shelter will actually extend somewhat off the back of the platform.  Signs, a few details, and final installation remain to be done.

That is awesome!  For all the hundreds of times I've been to Duncannon, I never noticed evidence of an old platform on the westbound side.   In this shot, I'm standing at the old station, so I would assume they were directly across?   

I almost got run over by this heavy mike.

An hour later these Alcos came from the opposite direction.

If you have the book to which I refer in the post, the photos show the platform as being directly across the tracks from the existing station.  I can't say that I've really gone looking for evidence of the foundation, but in just looking at the area from across the tracks, I've never noticed any remnants of the platform. I didn't want to scan and post the photos from the book due to copyright issues, but if you have or can access the book, you see all of this for yourself.

BTW, my son Steven loves modern NS power, and will love your photos above of the NS units.  He is thrilled with the new Lionel SD-60-E's, and I'm sure we will be ordering some for the layout.  The PRR GP-9's with roof antennas are more my speed...

Here's one more shot that I did not post originally since it had to be straightened before posting.  It shows the relationship between the station (which as you obviously know still exists today) and the platform.  The far end of the platform which was fill retained by a railroad tie enclosure has not yet been installed.  It was still sitting in my workshop while some glue dried!
