The NYO&W  has survived, at least into the Amtrak era! Actually, the NYO&W Historical Society and Museum managed to save a set of F3s and a set of FTs and are running a pair of excursions.

Picked up a few new engines this week & a 4 car set of the Bi Level NJT cars 































NS Dash-9 9794 leads 173 southbound through Gainesville, GA on the Greenville District as it passes the Amtrak station & some local power


NS Dash-9 9654 leads 119 southbound through Harrisburg, NC on the Piedmont Division 


NS SD70ACU 7326 leads 294 eastbound through downtown Altoona


NS Dash-9 9812 & an ex CR Dash-8 lead a westbound coal train through Capels, WV on the Pokey


NS SD80MAC 7207 (ex CR 4114) is back on home rails as it leads 35A westbound through Latrobe, PA 

A 2016 Christmas Layout memory

The 4th season that was modeled on the layout was Autumn, as represented by a 4'x8' Halloween display.

First off, the "tourist" section:

Like I did back in the 1950's I am on the floor playing with a train.  In this case test running recently acquired K-Line EP-5 with TMCC and Cruse.   But this is after having to repair the apparent  shipping damage where one of the pilots was snapped off!  As I kid in the 50's had the same  track layout of a double loop connected by two pairs of O22 switches on a 4x8 sheet of plywood for Christmas in the corner of my room.

Two observations!

First I think, at-leas,t this K-Line engines runs better with the cruse turned off.

Second being in my seventh decade, just over 6-feet and just over 200#'s the floor is no-longer a good place to play with trains.

Sure wish I still had my 6-6X8-foot table top layout from before the last several moves!

I'm back from my vacation from North Carolina (escape from Irma). I was able to do a few train related items while I was there, like going to the North Carolina Transportation Museum, which was really great. Also visited with family which was really nice too and relieved the stress of worrying about the storm. Here are some pictures from the museum.

Great photos to start this week. Really enjoy seeing the trains around the country each week model and real! 

Last weekend was busy for trains events locally. Our heritage railway society introduced a newly rebuilt interurban car to the fleet with a grand ceremony last Saturday. We use donkey diesel generators to run the interurban's and have not built one yet for the new car. So instead we used this black switcher engine that was custom built on a 6 wheel diesel truck. The engine switches grain cars from an industry near our station so they lent it to us for the weekend event. This would make for an interesting model project. Would love to have some models of these interurban's Would be nice if one of the model train companies did more vintage street cars and interurban cars. Sunday was the CN Family days near our home at the Canadian National Railway western Canada main yard and shops. Our club attended with a display, here are some photos of some real nice CN trains on the Canadian Toy Train Association layout and the special trailer to move the layout. I know it's "Weekend PHOTO Fun" but this was too interesting....     The N.S. Jersey Central heritage unit, a regular Norfolk Southern, and Union Pacific all pulling an interesting load.  Anybody know what those are?  Transformers?

Continued from the above post; here are some photos of the layout and trains that I set up at CN Days. 16x16 foot square of my portable fencing, a tarp on the engine shop floor to protect from the oil. Outside loops were K Line Super-snap track and a loop of Atlas. The 4x8 foam board with MTH Realtrax 3 loops. On the loops of track; outside was a Weaver Green CN engine 2 rail scale wheels and Weaver caboose. Next old Atlas F9 2 rail scale wheels engine set. Next a  Weaver 2-8-0 in CN colors, 2 rail scale wheels.  Next a MTH and Atlas engine 3 rail. On the board in the middle all 3 engines were pushing different MTH snow plows, a set of 4 Lionel MPC GP7 engines I swapped Williams power into, then MTH engines inside loops. Everything on the layout was CN. Run with MTH DCS and some DC transformers. 

Other things at CN days, 2 G scale layouts one shown, a tour of an engine cab, shops open for a view of engines under maintenance, small ride on train, bouncy castles, many displays and give away's, lunch, a look at engines in the yard, and Rocky Mountaineer loaned a train set that runs between Vancouver and Seattle. Folks were permitted into the 2 Rocky Mountaineer Gold Leaf  dome cars for a short ride through the yards. They have upgraded the domes to an all white interior with electric reclining adjustable seats with seat heaters. This is always a great event for the families and is very well attended, the kids love it. And our club enjoys sharing the layouts with them.  Click on photos for a larger view.

Yes, Jonny, I see them now!!  That looks like a great museum to visit, and your photographs are superb!  I'm glad you escaped the big storm!!

Nice catch! The first car is for hauling steel coils. The other 2 are likely transformers, as you guessed.

Nice Friday evening for a horseback ride on the back corner of the layout... but it looks like the hobos didn't pay any attention to Smokey's sign!

Time for MTH to re-design this old outdated auto car mold, it's totally incorrect for CR. Roller bearing trucks and molded grab irons are quite funny these days too!

Come on MTH, stop milking your old double door cars and give us something new and competitive.
