Car Inspection................

#1233

I got a chuckle from this photo, as it reminded me of a guy and gal climbing out of a tank car that was parked on a remote siding in the woods behind my house. The cars were brand new though and being stored until needed at a local industrial park. Somehow, I don't think they were FRA inspectors! Nice work as always Steve.

While straightening up some boxes in my office; (it's almost 2 years that we moved, and I'm still putting things away) I came across snapshots from the Carail and Madison Hardware tour while at the LCCA/LOTS convention in 2000. I scanned them in so that I could share them here. Enjoy.

These are of Richard Kughn's layout which was in the Carail building.

The autos were in another section of the building, I was partial to the '57 Star Chief because I had one as a kid.

These are of Richard Kughn's collection and more of the layout.

What follows is the reassembled Madison Hardware. The neon sign came from the store front and hung above the elevator entrance.

I've been converting some older MTH rolling stock to 2-rail w/Kadees. I had picked up some Center Beam flat cars some time ago and was able to get a duplicate of them so I could model it both loaded (loads available on eBay from trainsndetailmike, who will do them all in a single branding if requested) and empty (added the car weight from the loaded car to the empty). I used a different technique from the first car I did, plus I used the correct 36" wheels this time around. They turned out pretty good. Got a chance to test them on the club layout and they tracked very well. Now that I have the technique down I'm going to convert a bunch of old MTH auto racks. The older long MTH cars used short-shank hi-rail trucks which meant the trucks were located too close to the end sills. When I did the conversions, I relocated the trucks to the correct positions, which had the added benefit of reducing the "under-hang" on the cars when they round curves.

Here they are coupled with the first Center Beam I converted.
