Santa is coming soon...
The club layout is almost ready to open to the public - the grounds crew is working on the stairs/platform/and roof covering for the entry this week to provide good access from the parking area below.
I constructed this lift out panel from a foam block and covered it in plaster cloth. An interesting experience and gave a very nice rock effect in several areas.
Have a great weekend everyone and remember that we should be thankful to the Lord all year for the many blessings we enjoy in this fine nation!
Well I'm in the process of getting my layout back up and running. First order of business was to get the track cleaning train running and polish those rails on the upper level.
And as always my little helper was there to supervise.
Also picked up some new New Jersey Transit E8s from MTH:
A few shots from the road this week too.
This is the new yard I just finished Outside of Toledo, OH for handling growing coal business. Trains are forwarded from the BNSF at Chicago or Elkhart and we usually just leave the "Pumpkins" (BN power) on the train.
Makes the place look like a real pumpkin patch at times.
Also spent some time in Fostoria unloading a Herzog ballast train on new steel tie track.
That's all from me - Enjoy your long Holiday Weekend Folks!

Sure wish we were closer to each-other.

I posted these before but what the heck. Am in sunny New Orleans for the holiday weekend and don't have any new pics.
The new MTH CP holiday boxcars with LEDs.
Will take their place soon on the Christmas layout.
Across Canada in 25 minutes, Keaton style!
... and another 55 minutes for the "making of", including a verse of Casey Jones that I never heard before.
Happy Thanksgiving!!!
Hello Johan, I had sent you an e-mail earlier this month. Did you ever receive it?
RDG alco C430, Overland Brass custom painted. Not sure if anyone makes a C430 in plastic, but this one represents accurately the 2 Reading units with AAR trucks and rain gutters. Quite a unique Alco! The challenge is now coverting it to DCC. Considering the prices of brass 2 rail Overland models, I was very happy to be able to find this one for an affordable price.

That's great stuff.
I will say, however, that pictures like the above simultaneously please and frustrate me. I am delighted to see the joy and curiosity on those kids' faces, particularly the little guy in the blue shirt on the left.
I'm a bit frustrated, however, due to the seeming indifference projected by the body language of the adults. The dad in the plaid shirt looks to be engaged, but the others look like they're thinking about all the errands they have to run. They look like they're seconds away from checking their watches. I'm not sure any of them would think to convert this fun experience into an actual gift for under the tree.
Do others reading these comments think it would be a bit over the top to put a sign on all four sides of these layouts that says:
Would this be "too much" or a bit over the top?

P.S. I apologize if the adults in the picture are friends of anyone reading this. I'm not picking on them specifically, I'm just trying to make a general point about how to get kids into the hobby.
Here are some shots from the Greenberg show in Monroeville a few weeks back. Featured is PIHR member Bob W.'s veterans tribute train in honor of Veterans Day.

Welcome children, young and old!
Please be sure to tell Santa and Mom and Dad
that a train set would make a great Christmas gift!
(Just ask any of us to help!)

Steven, I totally agree with you on your take on this picture. A sign might help and I don’t think it would hurt. It seems to me that by and large most people just don’t have an interest in trains but anything that can be tried to awaken the train bug in people is worth trying in my opinion.
While mommy Christmas shops, Father and Son build Brio layouts.
Have a great weekend everyone.
John-
Hey Peter - I can see why you guys received an honorable mention in the MTH annual awards. You layout is fantastic!
The scale and variety of your buildings and structures and use of Atlas track really sets it apart for many others. Great display sir!
