The 1680 is a beautiful engine.
The only thing I would change on those beauties is the over sized headlight, but I could learn to llive with it...
Dave,
I think it depends on the angle you see it from.
Imagine laying on the floor watching that headlight coming at you.
Northwoods Flyer
Greg
True Greg, after growing up watching Uncle Jim's 2020 going around my Grandparents Christmas Tree, those Flyer headlights always looked big, but that shot looks great.
NICE Hudson!
Gentlemen Please! If we are going to talk about large American Flyer locomotive headlights let's at least try to keep thing in perspective! The headlight on the Hudson is big but the headlight on their 1216 is LARGE.
Cyclops!
Sometimes it's the little things that come along with a collection that are the most interesting.
Found this catalog request postcard with a collection that came into the local shop. The photo is from the 1926 catalog. The card itself isn't dated.

RSB definitely has the definitive AF headlight model!
Two American Flyer Zephyrs- early narrow body version at right and the later wide body cab at left (to accommodate a motor with reverser). I am looking for a source for a replacement rectangular "American Flyer Lines" decal for the unit at left, any tips would be welcome. Also a question for the Flyer experts, did all Zephyrs come with this nose decal installed?
DENNIS: VERY NICE George V!
I received my AF 3008 and 3007 this week and got them on the layout. They are in really nice shape for their age. They came polished up. The litho is in good condition on both sides. You can see that the trucks on these are much larger than the B&O car, which is really a disguised 3208.
There are some AF 3008 and 3007 cars on eBay on a Buy it Now. They are in much worse condition and the seller wants over $150 each. I think I am going to pass on those.
Her is a video of my Lionel litho. I think it would be fun to add a light to the Lionel caboose. I don't think I want to mess with the Ives caboose, because it is much harder to find and is original.
George
Great tinplate this weekend. I love my AF Hudson that was my late Dad's. He had started a restoration but never completed it. Ill eventually see to it. 😊
Ha Ha, I didn't even think of that, that is funny! I think you need one of these... Then you can get some European Beer cars to pull behind it!

Well done sir! Nice example of a pre 1914 lithographed GTV, the distinguishing features are the little tabs slotted through the boiler as handrail knobs, and the tender lacking the reinforcing wire around the inside of the coal rail. I've got 8 different Bing George the Fifths, 5 of which are LNWR black, so I guess I quite like them!
Cheers, Mark.
Steve,
Love the Green!

Thanks Mark! I've been wondering how to date this loco. I found some info as to when the black gave way to red or green locos but this is much better to know. This is definitely the oldest loco I own now, the only problem is I now need to keep on the look out for some proper time period coaches for it.... It seems to never end...

Beautiful Fred! Nothing beats live steam... You can't get the same effect with PS3 or Railsounds either. It's a completely different aura. What manufacturer is that? I'm not up on the current products.

That is an ASTER made for Fulgurex gauge 1 live steam locomotive I made from a kit running with British made J&M Pullman coaches. This was all made in the early nineties.

John S, Port lines has AF stickers for 9900 cars ID#1825. Not sure if they carry the nose sticker/decal. Ask Doug at PL. Henning's and David Trickel-615-630-1836 also possibilities. I got one a few yrs. from one of the above.
Chris
High speed Hudson- got to love magna-traction! Lionel 773 1964-66 version Hudson pulling a set of Lionel postwar streamline passenger cars on my layout. Actually this telephoto shot exaggerates the speed significantly, but no question these are nice engines!
Here are a couple more Bing George the Fifths, but not the usual lithographed and tabbed together type, but soldered and hand painted, known, in the UK at least, as the deluxe GTF, the first is a 4 volt dc electric GTF, and the second a clockwork Queen Mary, which was offered as an alternative to GTF in the deluxe model, both George and Mary were available in clockwork and electric, all these versions only being made pre WW1.
Cheers, Mark
George S,
I wanted to ask you before about the really cool Tin Plate Tower Clock you have sitting beside your Hellgate Bridge. Where did you purchase that Tin Plate piece, I would really like to acquire one for my Train Room. Marchant name & phone number please!

Hi Dave,
It's a Walkers Chocolate Mints 16" Tall Big Ben St. Stephen Tower with Clock. I bought it with mints on Amazon a couple of years ago after seeing Chris Lonero's.
Hope you find one!

Chris- thank you for the reply, I found the Port Lines Hobby Supplies website, and they do indeed have the nose decals. Did some Zephyrs come without nose decals?
Here's another tinplate streamliner shot- a Bryant (Sakai Japan export) streamliner with the Zephyr in the background.
Doc,
Thom you better hide that Tin Plate Clock Tower, it may disappear the next time I am at your place!
Trying to dig one out right now, am on a call back notification, when one comes in.
George S,
I remember seeing Chris's long ago, could not get one at that time either, you were lucky!
The picture of your Hellgate Bridge with the Tin Plate Clock Tower beside it and the 260E coming thru the Steel Girder Bridge, is just fantastic, a framer for sure!

John S. All the catalog illustrations show a nose decal starting in 34 through the end of the Coleman era in 37. I don't know if they actually were on the models or not. They are common on the tin version, but I don't see them on the cast ones. Possibly because of the parting line through the middle, they did not adhere well?
Timothy S,
Great looking original 277W (b) Work Train Set, just fantastic!
