A trio of Thorley Hoople Coaches in need of some work.

JEP was not only a trainmaker but also a toy maker. This small streamlined push-train/floor-train did not appear in their train catalogue but did appear in their general toy catalogue from 1949-1954. It is a simple toy of rather thin tin. This boxed set could be had with one, two or four cars, so I have the 4 car "luxury" version with a total length of 65 cm.:

Note the hole in the front of the red engine; a string could be attached to pull it along. It is in a very good condition and never played with; I assume it is old shop stock.

Lionel Classics 390E relegated to the top storage shelf since the new Lionel Corp PS-3 390E engine arrived.  Did any if you have a Strombecker wood train as a kid ? I had the smaller version of this set when I was 2 or 3.

In 1931 American Flyer introduced a new steam engine with a cast iron superstructure #1084.  It came in two sets #932 passenger and #933 Freight.  The trains were marketed as Express Electric trains and were only listed/illustrated in the dealer's price sheet for that year.

got a couple care packages this week. I had posted a pic of my work in progress 810 Derrick, and a forum member sent me a box of parts for the cost of postage. Thanks Rtraincollector!

So with what I already had, and with what Bill sent I have the terra cotta version (still need to order some parts)..plus a good start on the red and yellow version, plus spares.

and brother Dennis thought some 2600 cars would look better behind my 226E than freight cars.

and he included an 820 project. It looked at first like the green version, but the flaking paint revels terra cotta. Thanks guys!

sure thing...I've got more parts than I need.

Another buy from auction for a really small fraction of the value of that piece is a Lionel 763e loco.

Originaly it is a grey gunmetal but unfortunately someone painted it black and did a bad job. I try to remove the black paint with acetone, brake fluid and many other things but impossible to save the original paint.

I had to reworked the e-unit and resolving a short, the chassis is straight and it runs now very well. Also replaced front pony wheels with original ones.

Finally i repainted it dark gun metal but i am not really satisfied of the result and certainly i will try to find a better matching paint which is NOT easy at all. The one i use more match with a 400e than with the 763e.

Finally, i have several gunmetal models and they are all different greys.... i don't really know what to do...

I would prefer keeping that engine and find a 2263w vanderbuilt tender but if i am not successful doing it maybe it will be repainted black. there is a slight bent on the right side of the cab but i can leave with it.

Any suggestion welcome.....

Daniel, that looks great!  I think there are at least two different shades of Gunmetal in the repro paints (Henning's for example).  I have to admit though that one of the reasons I've been trying to get good Gunmetal original loco's is because I haven't been overly satisfied with the color match.  That said, I have not used either of the shades Henning's sells.  Maybe we could get someone who has used them to post some pictures of their work?  You are correct, Lionel ended up with several shade variations over the years as well.

This is not my picture, but I think was form someone on this forum...   It's pretty good in my view, but still not quite a match. I think the top is refinished and the bottom ones are original.  Hard to get that same tone  and tint...

Maybe i will wait a little before doing something and at first find a tender for it.

Daniel, I think what you have done looks very good as is, but it is just very hard to match that old Lionel factory color and finish especially with the Gunmetal Gray...

I used Rustoleum on my homemade tender I run with my original paint 225E

My 263e pulling a near limit 8 2816 hoppers and caboose!

My newest is this green and (mostly) brass edition.

In my head I may try to eventually collect all the tinplate traditions and lct 2816’s that mth has actually issued, but finding the sets that contain the earlier ones will be a long time challenge!

I may have rustoleum products in France, and in my hometown so it would be perfect.

As I said last week an interesting item would be shown this week. And here it is--the hard to find but not very expensive bench with light and trash barrel (cat 62-6). Interestingly the Kibri catalog refers to the trash barrel as a waste basket.

Because of my interest in the Erector products it was suggested I buy this book. It does tie many of the products and A.C.'s background and the companies history. It also included a neat turntable he had showing the 2-4-2 on erector piece built platform. i had not seen it before. The book is pretty comprehensive from 46 onward. Working on number three 420. Two are now complete and running. 

My newest additions.

Ives standard gauge train on the layout. The 122 Santa Fe reefer is a recent addition to my collection. These Ives freight cars are beautiful, but hard to find with good original paint. Was pleased to find this reefer in this kind of condition.

And a little follow-on from yesterday's post on the new Flyer 3020 Columbia passenger set; I got out my green 3020 to pose the two of them together for a photo. The green 3020 (which I acquired back in 2013) does run, but its performance pales in comparison to the new one!

Here are a few Gunmetal locos... I think there are three different shades of grey here too.

Hard to match that gunmetal paint, and it is also very sensitive to the light; natural light geaves a different color than spots or flash from a camera.

One of my latest acquisitions. Fleischmann GFN 325. Seams to be set up for 2-rail operation. I would love to have this little switcher in 3 rail. Got it from the previous stout auctions at a great price c7-c8 condition! 

All Fleischmann 0 gauge trains were 2-rail DC; they never made any 3-rail and /or AC. This locomotive is not a switcher but a passenger locomotive, a switcher would not have had a tender.

249E custom blue comet

Some colorful Marx 6" tin.

Running a naked 400E. I bought this power P1 chassis a while back to upgrade my Lionel Classic Blue Comet. Problem is it would run a few laps then blow the breaker. Checked a bunch of stuff, no luck. I began to suspect my 5 rail track was the culprit so I took it over to Jeff Meyer’s to test on his layout. Ran about 40 laps with no short. I believe the issue was the center pick up touching the #2 or 4 rail. Just an odd accumulation of slop and tolerances allowing enough lateral movement to allow the roller to touch a rail. I will take a bit out of the width of the rollers or use a modern roller with the tapered edges.

looks lightly used and in the original package.

The speckled roof is the actual color, not rust.

Also found this German destination sign which I believe to be Marklin?

have seen an American version of this one in the past and I think was attributed to Marklin at that time.

This is a good match for the later/lighter gunmetal except in its sheen.  Nobody has made a good Gloss gunmetal.  Remember that there are 2 distinct shades of gunmetal...one is called "Bronze gunmetal", the other is just "gunmetal" and there are myriad tones  between the two especially on the Bronze Gunmetal.

I wish someone could make the bronze gunmetal accurately.
