Gentlemen

Thanks to you both for some fine photos of VERY nicely weathered models.  Both the box car and the steam locomotive are really quite heavily weathered in their own way and yet neither strikes me as excessively weathered.

SIRT

You have chosen one of my favorite box car models as your canvas. I am especially impressed by the white bleeding down the side of the car from the Erie herald.

For those who are unfamiliar with them, The Pecos River box cars are deserving of recognition as a well done model (comparable to the MTH 50' Automobile box car or the Trainman 50' single sheathed box car) of a common prototype not available in plastic anywhere else.  This standard 50 foot box car design with 5/5 dreadnought ends and Murphy rectangular panel roofs was constructed by several car builders from the late 1930s until the mid 40s.  Some remained in service into the 1980s and would have been pulled by everything from Mikados to SD40-2s.

The Erie and CB&Q single door Pecos River box cars are available from The Public Delivery Track.  They also have the double door Pecos River cars available in several road names.  I believe John Smith is still selling the double door cars on E-Bay.  They are an excellent value and, as has been demonstrated, a great starting point for a weathering project.
