My Grandfather worked for the Western Allegheny Railroad in Kaylor, PA since he was still a teenager. I was quite young when he would be working the lines behind his house next to the limestone tipple in the early 50's.

I don't have much of a memory of the H10s steamers that he operated. But the one thing I do remember was the ringing bell when they would back up through the hand operated switches to load the cars with limestone. These were hauled up to Queen Junction where they were picked up by the Bessemer and Lake Erie Railroad to be run to the steel mills in Pittsburgh.

A friend from Bradys Bend shared these photos on Facebook a while ago. I thought that with the new version of the Western Allegheny H10 in the 2018 Lionel catalog, these might be of interest.

I do. "Ghost Rails Volume II - Western Allegheny Railroad Company." Where can I see your videos?

After my Grandfather retired, and they were selling the steam engines for scrap, my Mother asked him if he might buy one of them to start an excursion railroad line. He told her that those old engines had been driven pretty hard and were too worn out. So that was the end of that. I imagine that maintenance would have been a real nightmare. Still, I give my Mother credit for the idea and my Grandfather credit for knowing better.

My videos etc aren't posted anywhere but I could make copies for you. Will need a little time to dig things out etc.  I have moved twice in less than a year.  I lived in  southern Butler Co. for 50+ years and got to know the guys in the B&LE yard in Butler.  Do you know Dave & Linda King  ??  His Dad worked for the WA too. From what I understand, the PRR gave the Western Allegheny the old engines-which is typical.

Jim: Nope. I don't know Dave and Linda King. I have met and talked to one of the fellas that drove the F3 units on the run to Queen Junction. But that was many years ago. What I remember of the conversation centered around how often cars got hit at the crossings. I can't recall his name right now but he worked there for quite a while.

My Grandfather's name was A.C. Madden but everyone called him Dave.

Please don't go to any great lengths to make copies of your videos. That old railroad is just a curiosity to me now. If I had been born a few years earlier, I might have more vivid memories of these old locomotives. I live in Herman and spent a few years at Saint Fidelis when it was a minor seminary. My real name (it's not a secret) is Leo Hinterlang.

Hey Mark: Looks like we're neighbors. I think western PA has a lot of model railroad enthusiasts. What we need is one of those concentration maps for members of the forum. We'd tip the scales.

I read that you were thinking about buying the Lionel H10 Consolidation model. I don't think that I can swing that right now money wise. My brother got the H10 from MTH a few years back for his boys to play with at Christmas. They're both in college now; yikes!

I got a starter set for Christmas one year and it compelled me to get down the old Lionel stuff from the attic. I've been slowly accumulating FasTrack for an eventual layout in the basement. It's a pretty large space but at the moment, it is occupied and inaccessible. But soon there will be a giant yard sale and the sound of cut timber will echo through the house. But until then, I run my trains every day in my wild imagination; they never break down.
