Well, I think that we all realize that "anyone can ask what they want"; the funny part is that it's not a Buy-it-Now - these things were bid up that high.

Why, oh why? Wait - $230 (or $219) for 3 plastic cars...I must look these things up.

OK - I just did. Sounds and stuff. Still a lot. I'm sure that they sound good (as a friend's tank cars with squealing flanges, and so on, do), but, all-righty then.

It is not really unusual for people to bid over retail for readily available items on EBay. They must think that if something is listed on EBay, it must be the best deal possible. And there certainly are sellers ready, willing, and able to take advantage of that mind set.

Auctions can produce some unique mind sets.  1) I may never see this again,  2) I'm only paying what everyone else would pay plus a little more, 3) the desire to win and some other twists.

I bought a car off this forum a couple of months ago for $105.00 with the box.  The car had electronics inside of it.  I liked the car, saw one on a bay, it was non functional with no box.  Thought I would take a chance on it @ 36.00.  The car sold for 82.00.  Go figure.

This doesn't surprise me, nor does the report of what $$$ the Atlas reefers fetched but we are talking about the dynamics of one particular resale market. The Vision ethanol tank cars and indeed the Vision Evo engines commanded very high prices on fleab*y while they went for a good deal less in dedicated train auctions - if you could find them that is. Lionel probably could have sold out a higher production run of all of these models.

I wonder what will happen when the Legacy crane and boom cars come out? The TMCC issues of these also commanded a premium in the resale market and the sounds are even better than the tank cars or PFE reefers.

I'm interested in knowing what sounds they have.

Someone posted a passenger car with boarding, and click clack sound(?)....

Maybe an opening freight door and wood crates being tossed about?

An unload crew bantering?

Maybe its because so many trains sound similar (Not to downplay efforts, You know what I mean. Yes, we all hear the little stuff) , I find specific car sounds more intriguing.

The Vision PFE Reefers have four unique scenes, depicting icing the car, loading produce, re-icing en route and unloading at the destination. These scenes are user-triggered and can include foreman dialog and background crew at work. Using the min/max switch, the foreman dialog can be disabled but the background "working crew" sounds retained.

In addition, while moving the cars play a variety of grinding, bumping and rail clatter sounds. CAB1 can trigger brake squeal. CAB2 makes the brakes squeal, but from the Train Brake slider, rather than the engine brake button. One sound-enabled car per set.

That's a pretty complete summary. I know some folks have posted video of these cars in action.

Shortly after they were released, one set was bid to $700

I dropped the ball not pre-ordering but was able to get a set from Trainworld, glad I called.

I bought several sets because I liked the idea of wheel flange / brake noise.  Will have s different set in several trains.  The 'talk' will never be used for me.  Not interested.

I have a LOT of PFE reefers (OK, probably more than some people have total freight cars) for my UP steamers to pull.  For some reason, I just love the orange PFE reefers and Lionel makes some of the best.

Here's a quick video I shot at the NJ Hi-Railers with the BB pulling a string of PFEs that includes two sets of the VL PFEs. I don't see me using the crew chatter much but the rail sounds are fantastic.    I think they really add to the realism.  The sound is full and loud and can clearly be heard with multiple trains running in the NJ Hi-Railers room.

I think it really adds to the "realism!"

Turn up the volume!

I should've got one of these sets when I was able to, but that's a couple hundred dollars still in my pocket.

I did have a chance to get a set of those VL Ethanol tanks for $250, but I didn't have the money with me, and when I went back a couple days after, they were gone. But again that's a couple hundred dollars still in my pocket.

Don't buy anything, thousands of dollars in your pocket. Your logic taken to the extreme.

Lionel meant for all of us to buy two sets and set up the sound system accordingly - so jump on board their train!

Seriously, I would not buy a second set in the hope of turning a vast profit as on reflection I think that any current frenzy for these sets is a flash in the pan. (Why Lionel doesn't re-issue the Ethanol tank car set with sound I do not know as that I and others would snap up without a second's hesitation.)

It may not be so much that it's a flash in the pan... it's just that we never know what's gonna take off and what will be a dud.

I recall back in the MPC days, when Lionel delivered add-on passenger cars... stuff like the diner and regular vista domes for the SP Daylight and N&W sets.  Those extra cars always carried a premium.  Then Lionel came out with full vista domes, and everyone jumped on board thinking they'd be "hot cars" too.  As it turned out, they were all duds (in terms of overnight-collectables)... SP Daylight, N&W, and Santa Fe, to name a few.  NONE of them ever approached the premium status of the dining and regular vista domes.  In fact the full vista domes were eventually blown out at many dealers -- most likely the result of overproduction.  And of course, now that we're 30 years down the road, none of those add-on cars carry any premium whatsoever.  None.

Best to just buy what you like... and if you happen to land on a "hot item", that's just a bonus.    And just take satisfaction in knowing that it's only gonna be a "hot item" for a relatively short period of time when we look at the big picture.

Random fleeting flange squeal is nice, (our guests have quickly grown tired of the innane crew talk dialog) and as we don't need two or four more empty reefers just to get the operational car(s). For us the price point for the sound car was too high.

though at this price point as we'd be tossing the two dummy .
