Most of the time I find myself running the Lionel Legacy Santa Fe double headed northerns with the new Lionel Santa Fe reefers. What a gorgeous consist pulled by amazing locos (see my YouTube video) for a look at these fabulous locomotives). On the other main line I will usually run a passenger such as the California Zephyr pulled by Lionel FT's in WesternPacific livery. Both trains are dynamite.

Today I ran, what has to be, my most realistic and best sounding train . . . . a coal drag.

At the head end is a Lionel Vision Challenger in Clinchfield livery with a string of about 25 Atlas H21a hoppers. By far, IMO, the most dtailed hoppers I have seen. The loco spews steam from the stack, the dynamo, and pipes under the cab. Whistle steam adds to the effect and the sounds . . . . . YEOW. What a difference the speaker in the loco makes. When the train emerges from the tunnel on the 2% grade at 5-10 mph with the sounds bouncing off of the rocks and the steam floating around,  I am continually amazed.

You certainly had a lot of fun!   I definitely feel the same about the Santa Fe train: I run a single SF Northern at a time (for some reason I just don't like double headed steamers, only multi-unit diesels) anymore its 3759 with SF 15 map slogan cars and a scale SF caboose. Nice looking train and still short enough that it "fits" my layout well, stretching out to just over half the length of the longest straight section, etc.

I agree about the Atlas hoppers but most of my hoppers are pretty basic, Lionel or MTH, various roadnames, etc., many weathered, etc.   Still, they make for a nice train with enough of them in a row.  But I run then with an Allegheny or Yellowstone - seems like a more appropriate loco for hoppers.  I usually use my V Challenger (as you say, an incredible loco) to haul around 20 or so PFE reefers.

I came up with two 3-packs of the Santa Fe reefers, and agree that these are great cars. I really enjoy running them. They look good behind just about anything Santa Fe. Currently I'm using an Atlas RS-4 or 5 or something like that, but I've been using the starter set Lionel 0-8-0, Warhorse hudson, and red-silver scale f-3's as well. Someone recently posted an old article about the Santa Fe grape train I think, which is what I've been trying to model on my little layout.

I'm thinking about moving on to a WW11-era coal consist to compliment the reefer set.
