What are the odds that different manufacturers will select the same engine number for the same type locomotives.

I collect the Missouri Pacific road name.

Lionel makes a Mopac GP35, road number 603, 611non powered and 607.

Atlas makes a Mopac GP35, road number 603 non powered, 611 and 618.

MTH makes a Mopac F3 set, road number 515, 516 and unnumbered B unit.

Atlas makes a Mopac F3, road numbers 513, 514,515, 516 , 513B, 514B, 515B and 516B

Not really paying attention to this, I have two F3's in the same number. 515 and 516.

I guess it would pay to investigate a little more when you want the same unit from different manufacturers without the same road number.

I can see that a manufacture could lose out on a sale because they have the same number as another manufacturer.

I would not buy a Lionel GP35 except the one number that I may not have, (I have the Atlas 603, 611).

Just thought it was odd that there were so many engines in the same road number and this is in just one road name!

I believe that manufacturers refer to photos in books for reference when making model railroad equipment.  If GP35 #603 has a good color photo in a MoPac book, you can bet that number will be produced.  Producing a different number would require some additional research.  Was #607 a valid GP35 number?  How about 615?  It's easier to just make #603.

I even see this across scales.  I have an Atlas Michigan Central boxcar #80734.  I've seen that exact road name/car number combination on an HO layout (not sure of the manufacturer) and on an N-scale layout (Kadee car).  There must be a good photo somewhere.

I agree with Bob Bartizek's observation. I've noticed many times that when manufacturers come out with a Milwaukee Road item, the road number correlates to a photo in one of the Morning Sun color books. Also, you will find a disproportionate number of steam locomotives right out of the Model Railroader Cyclopedia. The Weaver die-cast Consolidation from a few years ago is one such - it's an Illinois Central prototype with a full set of drawings and photos in the MR Cyclopedia.
