I'm not ordering anything out of that catalog.  If I buy anything that's there, it'll probably be a few years from now in the second hand market

Since I collect Lionel PS-1 boxcars and like the offerings(even Grave's Mortuary) I'll be ordering those for sure. The C&O Inspection Vehicle and REA truck and trailer are also definite purchases.

I don't buy very much these days due to the poor economy and uncertain future of it.

If I were to purchase any 2012 items they would be down the road when the prices drop to the closeout and fire sale levels. That's all they are worth to me. I consider all of today's trains, no matter who makes them, to be low quality Chinese toys.  Williams might be the one exception. They are still Chinese but they are simple enough that the poorly educated unskilled cheap labor that they employ, can usually figure out how to assemble and test them. Today's trains are a far cry from the products once manufactured here by the highly skilled, fine American craftsman of yesteryear.

I have three of these beautiful engines. They are one of my favorites. Thank goodness I got them when they were only around $400. One is the Lima demo. I'm building a railroad and don't need any more equipment. So, no I'm not buying anything. Don

Gonna get me a pair of 2239 freight sets with the Big Illinois Central F3 A+B,

so I can run a A-B-B-A and four big wound field motors!  Can smell the ozone

already!  Then let's get the UP Anniversary set and some Rock Island Alcos!

Nothing, at least after a cursory look at the catalogue sneak-peeks. Final word
still pending. Lionel and I have not "talked" much for a few years, now. Their path
becomes less my path, it seems. The ICG GP30 (last catalogue) would have found its
way to my house, but was too greatly flawed in design (wrong trucks) and execution
(mis-aligned steps) to purchase.

There was a small train show locally this past weekend and a guy had a K-line B&A Berk
for $525 (TMCC, cruise, etc), and a K-line C&O Mike (TMCC) for $400-odd.

I've got all the K-line Berks I need, but it was a good price (new, more or less), if not
a steal.

Just for the record, I do have my eye on an MTH Dash-8 from Jason's Trains. MTH's
consistent (not perfect) quality - heck, just their consistency itself - becomes more and more
a positive factor.

Hopefully the timing will work out, I have two months left to pay for the engagement ring that I bought (at an outlet mall in Las Vegas, no less) for my fiance about two years ago, so assuming I have about three months before the wedding, I figure I can buy the UP 2023 alco's and the Northern Pacific engines.  Next year, after I am married, it will be a differnt story, and I will be back to just buying the catalogs... 

Definitely going for the UP 4-12-2 and the motor city set, oh and a BN SD40-2...and a few more of the aluminum covered hoppers, and........

The B&O EM-1: I expect it will be delivered tomorrow or this weekend. It's been shipped

 

The Southern Crescent Pacific: should arrive int he next few days, too. It's been shipped.

 

The Santa Fe version of the Berkshire - whenever it arrives; Jly - Oct?.

 

The UP version of the 0-4-0 shifter - not sure when it is promised, but i will wait.

 

The SF version of the tractor-trailer.  Not sure it is that good of a model (the tires on the tractor look a bit too big for scale) but I wil convert it to Superstreets, regardless.

 

I also have two sets of the SF "Map' cars from the 2011 v.2 catalog, which I assume will be in the 2012 catalog, on order, listed as April delivery, too.

 

Other than several sets of the new Lionel utility poles, that is all I have ordered.

I need to see the complete catalog and descriptions of items when it comes online tomorrow.  As always there is probably more of what I want than I can afford. 

 

No matter what the slanted news media reports about how good the economy is getting, here in Oregon businesses are closing, record number of homes are being re-posssesed, people are getting laid off, unemployment is high and gas prices are out of sight.  Like others I have to put some of my extra money in the savings.

Anyone else in for the NYC Archive F3's - those look glossy and very PW retro!!! Most of the PW items look to fight with Williams items that have been on the market for 7 years now. Lo

I really can't make the call until I read the actual catalog descriptions of the items.  Features are important to me, and I'll want to see what's packed into the Post War Inspired Series.

Not much. Waiting for the new Lionel/MTH Tinplate catalog which is supposed to be released in time for York.   I've always wanted one of the UP Anniversary sets so might go for that one.

I think the Blue Comet .... It is really up to my 6 year old son .... I give him the choice of 1 engine and he likes steam.  He watches Patrick's videos all the time and he now wants a steam engine with whistle steam.  For Christmas he wanted a CSX diesel because Rich B has one.  It seems all my purchasing decisions are made when my son watches YouTube videos!  LOL 

 

Since my largest turn is 048 I am limited in what I can purchase.  

Chris, I've had very bad results with the "early era inspection cars" if this is the model you are talking about:  the small 1940s Ford sedan type with a leading truck with four tiny spoked metal bogie wheels out front.  I'll admit it is solidly built and feels incredible: that's a lot of wiehgt for such a tiny vehicle!  But other than Lionel's lighted Fastrack bumpers, the inspection car is the worst Lionel product I have seen.

 

Of three I've bought:

1st - had bad electronics: that is a very small, very packed-in electric board in there: it never ran and I returned it to my LHS

2nd -  would not run at all: too much wet paint inside the body casting had dripped/spread into the axle bearings, etc., locking/freezing the axle.  Apparently I burned out the motor trying to get it to run - I took it apart, cleaned the bearings and replaced the motor (takes the same one as most Superstreets vans - I have a number of spares).  This runs, but I don't run it often because the body gets warm (see #3 below).

3rd -  ran, but the electronics board overheated and burned up in maybe one hour of running.  The body was noticeably warm when I picked it up after it died - which means that tiny board had to be very hot!  My LHS took this one back, too, telling me "some of these do that."  They gave me a replacement but I don't run it much: I think it would burn out, too. 

 

By the way - if it matters mine would run on Superstreets track but would not stay on  the smaller (16" diamter curves)- the front truck with its two axles and four tiny wheels will not swivel quite tightly enough.  But this can be modified - just - barely to fit by repositioning the front truck forward so it can swivel just a tad more.

Probably buy C&NW SD40-2 and C&NW PS-1 boxcar.

I was going to get the last two in Santa Fe livery but I have enough red vehicles on my layout - need more green.

 

Still thinking about:

- UP Centepedes - I passed on these when in the 2011 catalog: I think Centepedes are ugly, but this year's write up stresses the sound, which is Lionel's forte - four speakers!!!!!  And anything that is big and in armor yellow and gray floats my boat.

- SF three-car "Map" reefer set - I had two of the five car sets on order, these are different numbers, - might as well get some?

- 20th Century Limited - the whole seven-car set would go nice with a Vision Hudson, wouldn't it?

Got to have the Rock Island GP-9!!

So far the BNSF command controlled speeder that will fit nicely in the Kline operating speeder shed is a go. 

Just a big maybe.. Either the MCRR Berk. Love the Elesco feedwater tank with the heavy piping detail or the Acela if it has the bugs worked out and "ALL" the features of the previous set. (no mention of tilting cars in catalog)

No accessories and no insane overpriced RS for me when scale RS can be had in the secondary market at pennies on the dollar...

After first review, I'm tempted by the Union Pacific 0-27 Passenger set, always wanted one, and the UP GP9.

 

Probably should also get the burning switch tower to give my MTH fire house something to respond to.
