I have to see what the "real" prices are for some of these items.

I was somewhat stunned, by some of the MSRP prices for the steam and diesel locomotives.  I think the NS ES44AC engine is a cool engine, but $649 is too much and there would have to be a decent discount to get me to commit to a pre-order.

While I'm not interested in the SD40's being offered, I did like the graphic of the SD40 engine and the chart showing the difference in the model by road name. The following page, however, showed a standard engine with distinctive paint schemes. I guess Lionel is committing to tweak the individual engines according to the two page graphic?

I do like several of the freight choices, like the 3-pack tanker sets.  I'm also considering a couple of the auto carriers if the price is right, as most of these on the secondary market seem to go for near list price.

Bottom line, maybe an engine or some rolling stock, but not both.

preorder looks like around $519 for the ES44s.

I work at a train store and for every 10 customers that want to buy track, 9 want Fastrack (actually of those 9, 7 buy Fastrack and 2 buy Ross) and 1 wants tubular track. I don't think Lionel left tubular track behind, I think the market (customer demand) did. I am sorry that the consumers have left that track system behind, but why should Lionel make it if so few buy it?

I was kinda feeling the same when the 4501 Southern Mikado was shown. Lionel can be a tease sometimes...

I had to check the Clinchfield SD40, but the ratchet in the low nose is correct from the first order, covering the 3000 and 3006. Later orders had the brake moved to the rear porch. Will have to see the street price to consider. Sure wish they offered non-powered units, but even those would be $300 plus, I'm sure.

May have to stick to my PS-1s and some Southern Railway freight cars.

The Southern 21" cars are nice, but they would be for the later era, 1960s - 1970s, not quite right for the PAs they offer. Would make great excursion era cars behind a 4501, though!

I have to agree with MLAT but unfortunately I only model MTH. This also makes me worried because with the new Lionel ES44's this means MTH will be more hesitant in putting the ES44's in the next catalog.

With that being said, it is nice to see a company finally do a black NS ES44AC in O scale once again.

STICKER SHOCK TIME

In the ready to run catalog some of the new TRADITIONAL boxcars are now listed at $85.  This is so far over the top that you have to think the bean counters at Lionel are now located in Oregon and are sampling some of the weed. Especially when Menards is selling traditional size boxcars for $19.

For me nothing. I searched the catalog twice without finding one item I'd even be half interested in.

I was hoping a heavy Mikado in GTW or CN , That's a class one railroad that always seems to go unnoticed. Lately fringe short lines seem to have the production edge.   Then hopefully even a simple Pere Marquette caboose for the incomplete Berk, but Lionel says no again. Hopefully MTH puts one in catalog soon to end the misery.

PS-Yes, I'm the same person who started the catalog predictions thread.

Probably the same thing I ordered from the 2014 Lionel catalog!

Nuthin'   LOL

I'll wait for the 2015 Hafner or Unique Arts catalogs to come out!

Grand Trunk Western SD40 diesel-electric locomotives

Chessie System auto rack on Trailer Train flat car

Burlington Northern and/or Conrail Pullman-Standard 60' Boxcar

Perhaps the other GTW 89' Auto Carrier

I like the P&W Auto Carrier.

The Ontario Northland PS-5 flat car scheme looks brighter colored than the previous version.

The main difference for Southern passenger cars during the 60s and 70s is the painting of the roof black, and after the early 70s, adding the "Look Ahead and Look South" emblem on the car sides (matches heralds on the locomotives). Your image shows the cars as delivered in the as-delivered scheme all silver, with car number and name on the sides. There may also be a discrepancy with the window arrangement, but that is getting really technical.

These new cars would be correct behind a set of green E-8s pulling the Crescent, or 4501 in excursion service. Most of the images found for Southern streamlined cars are from this era.

Since the PAs were used late 40s-50s, these cars would need to be backdated to be historically correct. Check out this view of a Southern passenger train from 1951 and compare the cars. All the roofs are still silver, and no decals. Of course, we can run our trains anyway we want.

Marty, glad you pointed that out.  I was going to check tonight.  Won't be needing those as I already have a set on order.

With that said, there is nothing I'll need from this catalog.  A great feeling actually.

But, Version 2 will probably catch me with something.  21" ABS UP passenger cars or an FEF with whistle steam will hurt!

Probably the command control Gantry Crane (Bucyrus Erie) and maybe the Turbo Missile Launch Flatcar from the RTR catalog.  No bigger tickets most likely.  I'll stew over it a bit more and maybe come up with another piece of rolling stock or 2.

The Bethlehem Steel RTR set looks nice with the little Docksider making an appearance, even if not as a stand alone engine offering.

Sorry to see the M-7 sets "default" is now only 3 cars.  I understood it for the Batman set since it probably costs more to License a set like that.

Price on the 164 Log Loader seems a bit high for a conventional accessory with no noticeable frills.

Would like to see some Station Sounds cars made to go with previous 18" sets where they were previously absent (SP PA "set" from a few years ago as an example).  I guess I can hope for the next catalog.

In general catalogs look nice, but I did note the zoom not working on a lot of pages (right hand pages is my observation) in the RTR and Holiday Memories.  Maybe they will realize it and fix it now that it's out there.

WOW!  I really like the new Lionel catalog.  It's too bad Lionel doesn't offer a -2 like MTH.  I could use the Missouri Pacific PA along with the Wabash PA.  I'm working on eliminating my 3 rail equipment but those Wabash passenger cars are very tempting.

I'm glad that Lionel is offering Kadee pads on some more equipment.

I took the picture below when I was 12.  It was just before I boarded this train lead by an Alco PA.  Those Mopac engines were beautiful.

I would have posted earlier but after seeing the prices the wife had to get the smelling salts to wake me back up.

The catalog had some nice items I would like, NS ES44AC, PRR B-6, Southern 2-8-2.

However.

What I will be getting are some of the 21" C&O and Southern cars. Army PS1 some figure packs and accessory items.

Since I am retiring like many other baby boomers in Oct I will have to watch my ordering, the mega bucks will no longer be available, the boss wants to travel to Europe.

Those street prices better come down a h-llin for this old geezer to take the bait.

Again items I could use, not in catalog, Heavyweight Passenger cars scaled but in 16". Then there are items I could/want, but the prices are either a weeks groceries, or monthly mortgage payment. Going to be hard to stay in the hobby with each new catalog deciding on either eating, paying bills, or splurging on a new toy.
