What business have you modeled for your 4750 hoppers

Glad you brought this up.

I'm planning 2 types of businesses-1 a grain elevator. I thought I'd split PVC pipes in half to represent grain silos.

The other,fertilizer plants that handle fertilizer hoppers. I can make that out of wood or a nice looking box,'till I get to modeling structurers in depth.

I will be putting together a salt dealer.. older 4750's get put into salt service.. 

 

So why not! 

 

in fact, I don't think i've seen anyone model a salt dealer plus the totally rusted 4750's

that are on the rails about ready to scrap.. you'll see car types from 3300's to 4450's to 

4750's in salt service. The G&W on a line in NY carries a lot of salt..

That's an idea I didn't consider as I'm in heavy grain country so fertilizer & grain are carried in 4750s & 5161s plus 4600 cvd hoppers. There's so many road names out there the ,what's the right name for it,"less than caring attitude" of major freight manufacturing co's in producing more models for these commodities blows my mind. We got a good start with the 5161 & 4750,but the road names never progress except at a snails pace.

You ae welcome for the idea. The salt industry is HUGE.. Salt manufacturers are

huge facilities that use rail. salt bins, conveyors, etc.. it's pretty cool.

Same with fertilizers etc. I think Model RRer put out an "industries 2 or 3" book

that showcases the salt industry. I have it some where here.

There is even a cool shot/picture during a bad winter in Chicago where they needed salt and had no where to dump it out of railcars.. so the RR positioned the salt cars above/ on a bridge in Chicago proper above a road and dumped the salt right through the bridge onto the road! The car looks like a 4460 or 4750 type car. It's great shot! below the bridge was a front end loader and dump trucks taking the salt away..

I can send you pictures of the salt industry. etc, salt cars. You can google the salt industry also. There are tons of pictures when you hit 'images'.. also, look up the 

G&W RR, Rochester & Southern RR as they serve a large salt mine which is actually

expanding to get more railcar into the facility. I think it is "American Salt

Here are some salt cars being unloaded last fall in Des Moines, IA.  The city was unloading them in a small Norfolk Southern interchange yard.  I'm planning to model a couple myself.
