This guy is an ex Navy submariner, and those guys are a little more twisted than us surface pukes but as you will see at the end, this poor guy just wanted to build a train layout in his basement..... We call that Scope creep where I work now lol

I know there are several ex military types on this forum so I hope you all get some entertainment out of this little story.

Thanks for sharing this. All I can say is "Dive, Dive!" The ex submariner who did this HawkBill basement is a very talented wood worker and craftsman. I have a few things in my workshop/train room to remind me of my working days at US Steel and GE but this guy went all out.

That is so cool, Dennis. Awesome theme. Thanks for sharing. Did you have a contractor do your framing and drywall work? My drywall work usually looks like the ocean when I'm done with it. Yours looks great.

Thanks Dave, just to be clear, this is not mine, although I think it is super cool.  I was a surface puke on birdfarms lol

Dennis after 17 years in the Navy, the last thing I ever wanted to see is the bunks we slept in ( or familiarity of said ) He did nice work, but obvious this guy never has returned to civilian life. I'm proud of my time in the Navy even with what I went thru to get me to where I'am with my PTSd, but I would do it over again if asked ( that probably will never happen seeing I'm 65 ), and hope no one has to endear what I have but I know there is Army & Marines facing it almost every day.

Sure did some nice work thou.

I took my daughter on a tour of the USS Midway just to give her an idea of how I lived and worked when I was a BT in the Navy (USS Morton DD948). She was absolutely horrified.

Last year I took my grandson and wife up to the Intrepid in NYC to check out how my Navy life was.  I was on the Shangri-La, the same class of carrier.   We also did the USS Growler tour, it's part of the Intrepid Museum complex.  Worthwhile tour if you are in the area.

Very interesting, very dedicated!

I think this just takes the new prize in terms of similar discussions that rise up here every so often (think the last one (or resurrection of a previous one) was only a week or 2 ago): "Should I try to sell my house with the train layout still in it?".

While there are probably quite a few more people with Navy background than interest in model trains, I'm guessing finding someone who want's a Navy issue urinal as part of the functional plumbing is not something you are likely to stumble across in the real estate market.

Still a very cool project though.  And he finally got to build his train layout too.
