I have 10 MTH locos, PS-2s and 3s and a TIU that is likely 15 years old along with a handheld remote.  I am running version 4.10 of the software and have not updated because my stuff is so old you need a special cable.  I also have a very old TMCC system but only one Lionel loco that is more of a shelf queen than an operating loco.

What should I buy as far as MTH stuff and/or other mfgr to keep my locos running into the future?

Worried I should buy/update now as opposed to later.

Just buy an RS232 cable and a phone cord (the one that goes from the base to the handset) and a stereo plug and you'll be ready to upgrade, etc. Upgrading is not all that complicated and will give you better bug free performance.

If your computer has only USB ports, you will need to get a RS232 to USB adapter cord also.

I have a TIU 18 years old and it works just fine.

Your "very old TMCC system" will also operate all TMCC and Legacy locomotives. I use TMCC, and my Command Base was installed in 1995 and has never had an issue.

I operate everything (TMCC/Legacy) from that period to current production, though TMCC will not access all the peripheral/secondary features that Legacy offers (most of which are not relevant to my interests), but all important functions are backwards compatible. They stop, go, smoke and blow.
