Second Generation: ALCo C630, EMD SW1500, GE U30C, EMD GP30, GP35, SD45, GP39-2, GP40-2, and others.

 

I haven't heard any Third Generation or other "Generation" applied to diesels since then. I suppose they could be called "Modern" diesels. Rebuilt diesels are part of that, too, though there aren't as many being rebuilt now as there were when Second Generation diesels started showing their age.

First Generation : EA to Gp9 or Alco s1 to Rs11...

Also first generation diesels included all models by Baldwin ( such as the VO 1000, Centipede, R16 Sharks, and other models ) and Fairbanks Morse( Trainmaster and other switchers )  ... perhaps these two manufactures produced a few second generation diesel era modelsas well?
