Hello fellow forum members.  I am a long time train enthusiast and model railroader.  I am also a recent convert from HO to O "Hi Rail," but that's another story.  I'm posting on this forum for the first time because I just inherited a bunch of Lionel std gauge trains - a new area for me.  The set includes an 0-4-0 center cab electric engine, 4 freight cars, caboose, and two passenger cars.   The engine is painted green an has "Lionel 10E" markings on the side.  All the equipment is original paint.  The rolling stock all looks operable, but the wheels on the engine are corroded and warped - no way she is running without refurbishment and new parts.  The shell looks old with a few missing parts (like the pantographs), but is in otherwise good condition.

I'll post pix when I can, but can anyone tell me about the 10E loco?  When was it made?  Are parts available to get her back to operating condition?  Do trains like this have any value?  Not interested in selling - I just appreciate the tinplate set as a piece of toy train history.  I'll likely use it for display purposes in my future train themed man cave.  Thanks for the help.

The 10E was first introduced in 1926, and came in various colors.  Parts should be available, including wheels, from various Prewar suppliers.  One is a sponsor here, Henning's, and not sure, but he may have wheels available to replace your set.  Post some photos, to know which version 10E you have, plus the cars, and then others can chime in with prices for a valuation.  From a 2007 catalog of Prewar, the Green 10E if in excellent condition would have a value around $300-400.  That is, if it is in excellent, running condition, very good paint, etc..  Prices can be all over the place, all depending on the condition.  Good luck

Here are some pictures of my new collection.  Besides the engine and rolling stock, the collection includes several pieces of std gauge track and two switches.  All the track looks way too rusted / tarnished to use, but it has a great looking natural "rail brown" color and patina.

The only accessories were the track and switches.  From what i can tell, the set is missing a passenger car.  I have the PRO and the observation, but not the Pullman.  The freight cars include a flat, box car, stock car, ventilated box car, gondola, and caboose.  Does anyone know if these would have come in a set, or were they purchased separately?  I assume they are all from the same late 20s time period?

The 10e in Peacock Blue came in Passenger sets and a freight set.

Set # 352E   10E + 332,339,341 Passenger cars    1928-1930

Set # 354E   10E + 511, 512, 513, 514, 510 Freight Cars    1928-1930

There are 2 Macy's Specials...One exactly like set 352E, one like 352E but the loco has a dark green bild-a-loco frame, any they both may have an orange stripe at the bottom of the loco cab. Realistically the set box must be there to prove Macys.

Ok -.I will chime in.  You have a peacock color #10 and cars.  And a nice classic assortment of 500 series freight cars.

511 flat car - missing it's lumber load

512 gondola

513 cattle car

514R reefer

517 caboose

Pretty sweet.  You need a 514 boxcar, a 515 tank car, a 516 hopper and a 520 floodlight car and you're all set.  And a peacock 339 Pullman car.  Your time period is correct.  Have fun.
