I finally got my new to me 3rd Rail PRR S1 on the track tonight. Just ran it back and forth as I do not have any O-72 laid yet.

A fantastic loco!!!!

The person who I bought it from had little info about the loco.....and 3rd Rail/Sunset could provide ZERO info too.

I was under the impression the loco had a DCU and smoke but that was all. When I powered it up I found it had sound. On power up I got two 'clang' then into idling steam sounds of blow off, pumps etc. I get a chuff while in motion and when I shut the power down at the end I get a single 'clang' then silent. I know I could open her up and look but I'd rather not if I do not have to.

What system is this if anyone can tell?? Also is there a battery or other things I need to watch for?? Thanks for any help!!!

3rd Rail locomotives of that era came with Seuthe (spelled something like that) smoke units and QSI sound systems.  Yes, there should be a 9-volt rechargeable battery in the tender.  The smoke units run on a few drops like 5 or 6 of a lightweight smoke fluid.  Mine had problems with MTH smoke fluid but worked well with LGB fluid.  I never tried Mega Steam in them.

Completely obsit with me...I have better luck with the mth proto1..Id have a bunch of QSI sound chips..wanted to try them out on my Q2..well they didnt work or something..try to put the orginal sound chip back in my Q2 QSI and nothing..not very happy about it..so I threw in a MTH proto1 in it..

man i really hate them//at least mth proto1 you dont have to do that..wonder where i can get it re done at? wondering if qsi can still do them?
