I have recently installed a ceiling train kit and would like to have the option to purchase/run the options mentioned above. I cannot find a simple answer.

I undstand I will need a PowerHouse. What I am not sure of is if I need the Remote base unit if I have purchased a separate Powermaster? Is there a single "brick" that provides this functionality? I like the passenger sets so I am going with the 180watt option. It is also only a single track without accessories with no intent/option to expand. Thanks in advance.

Unfortunately, there is no simple answer. It depends on your preferences.

For example, since you will only be running one engine of one type at a time on your layout, you could get by with a simple throttle transformer (like the new Lionel CW-80 or an MTH Z-1000) and a command set (base and remote) like the Lionel Legacy #990 set.

When running in command mode you would set the throttle to give you 18 volts to the track and then control the Legacy/TMCC engine with the remote. When you want to run a conventional engine, you would simply place the engine on the track and control it by manipulating the throttle on the transformer (at substantially less than 18 volts). No need for a powerhouse, powermaster or separate 180 brick. That's it.

If you wanted to step up so that you could control your conventional engine using the command system's remote rather than having to manipulate the throttle on a transformer, then you would need to incorporate something like a powermaster, which would allow you to do that.

John,

Your question has come up many, many times in the last several weeks so I'll suggest the following, very recent, threads for you to view:

If you still have questions afterward just come back here and let us know, and we'll hop right on them.

Let me give you a simple reply. The conventional engines require the track power to be regulated, this gives them speed control. Any engine that is either TMCC or above can run together as the track power is constant the engines are addressed separately.  Now you can run a conventional engine with TMCC you just have to remember that the track power will control the conventional engine and effect the TMCC engine as well.

I have a similar set-up to yours. I use Lionel Legacy. You will need the following if you want Command and Conventional control like on my layout:

1. Legacy #990 Command Set, Legacy Cab-1L/Base-1L Set, or TMCC Command Set

2. A Powermaster (I use the new Legacy 180W version); the older TMCC PM receives its signal directly from the TMCC remote, while the new LPM requires a Command Base

3. A power supply: I used to use a CW80, but I needed more power so I bought a 180W Powerhouse

4. A PM Adapter Cable; you only need this if you use a transformer other than a PH Brick (135W or 180W)
