Normally, I would just download a manual however I am running trains at the Virginia Museum of transportation and the train that has the issue belongs to the museum.

My thought is poor TMCC signal strength. Is it this engine only? If so, maybe there is a problem with the connection with the antenna.
The smoke unit is bad, usually the motor.
Presuming you mean a Legacy locomotive thats being operating under TMCC the diagnostic codes are the same:
# of Blinks: 1 Main drive motor stalled.
2 Smoke 1 element problem.
3 Smoke 1 fan problem.
4 Not applicable.
5 Not applicable
You get 3 resets via the remote, before it shuts off completely.
However, if you remove power and repower you get another 3 resets.
