have my layout set up to Legacy. Run a conventional engine and Railsounds tender and not disconnect the Legacy wire???

Nothing, if you’re using a transformer that has a traditional throttle,......a conventional engine doesn’t know and doesn’t care about the legacy base,....

It works fine as long as:
-the engine is truly conventional and
-you have a way to vary the track voltage.
Alright, a little back story. I picked up a Lionel NYC Flyer Set from someone who was about to toss it, #30016. Put the engine and tender on the track, hooked up to a ZW and the wire to my Legacy base.
Ran it for a few minutes and the engine stopped. I assumed it was the 13 cars behind it. Took all but 3 cars off and ran it again. Again, the engine stopped after a few minutes. This time I noticed a bit of smoke from both the engine AND tender. Tender has a cooked wire that I can plainly see, engine just has that burnt smell, nothing obvious so far...

Probably why they were tossing it Jeff, ....those little starter set steamers are pretty notorious for cooking the little E103 reverse unit board inside the locomotive,.....especially if you’re seeing the magic smoke coming out, that’s the first tell-tale sign, .....might be time to open it up and have a look around, .....this has nothing to do with the legacy base,.....so you’re fine there,....

Is this a conventional starter set or Lionchief? I think they made them both ways. 13 cars is way too much for either. That motor isn’t much bigger than a pencil eraser.

OK, I assumed all the NYC Flyer Sets were headed up by an 0-8-0.

This is the way back when NYC flyer set,.....had a little 2-4-2 diecast steamer...like 1997-2000....something like that,....

Pull that tape off the circuit board Jeff, see if she’s a cooking under there,......these were also notorious for cold solder joints at the wire to board points .......

Set is #30016 from 2008. Doing a little digging I found a length of a nylon string wrapper around the motor shaft. That couldn't have helped!
Well, I was close, I remember that set had a long and lustrous career!....that set, and the Pennsylvania flyer.......

Pulled off the tape nothing crispy. The strands I pulled out looked like the heavy backing strands on carpet. I'll get it cleaned, properly lubed and put it on the track tomorrow.
Now to figure out why the RailSounds tender melted a wire!?
Stay tooned!!

Good deal, maybe it’ll survive, ....do take a peak at the backside of the board, ...it’s pretty easy to get it off the plastic cradle it’s sitting on since you’re in there, just to have a peak around looking for toasty critters,....

Back on my desk I started digging a little further on the bottom side of this engine. Took me about half an hour and I pulled out about a rock glass full of nylon type thread/string wrapped around the axles. Paperclip, tiny knife, just digging.
Result: Oiled and greased, it's been running around the tree for almost another half hour and still going strong!
YAY!
