Is there an HO building you've seen you wish was also made for O gauge?

Walthers REA Transfer Building kit in O scale ought to be a good seller.  They offered the HO kit about fifteen years ago.  John in Lansing, ILL

While I'd like to see Walther's produce the Milwaukee Road Everett Station in O, I know that's not likely - despite all the different manufacturers' Hiawathas. More realistically, I agree completely about the Revell bakery.

I agree with all the Revell kits the superior bakery.weekly herald and the barn. They will kits with great character.

That’s long been in my list, too, or as the Weekly Herald variation with the flat front. Here are a couple more on my long wish list:

Merchants Row (originally produced by Magnuson Models and later Walthers)

Walthers Modern Travel Center (clearly inspired by the Kwik Trip chain of convenience stores in the Midwest)

Freight station (rendered by several manufacturers, including this Tyco version, in HO and N scale in this same design)

Woodland Scenics

Lots of them - if I get motivated I just scratchbuild one of them in O scale instead of bemoaning it's lack of availability.

This is one that I built (stick by stick) following photos of a FOS kit that has since undergone a good bit more detailing and applied scenery.

got this as a gift from a friend just last week.  i'll find a way to use it because: 1) it came from a friend, and 2) H.J. was big in Pittsburgh while I was growing up.

Merchant's Row would be awesome.

Merchants Row could be replicated by starting with an MTH corner building and using Ameri-Towne fronts until you get to the next street, then use an Ameri-Towne side and rear to end the row.   John in Lansing, ILL

I am with MWB and DKDKRD when it comes to building rather than hoping, and using HO plans.  Didn't one of the Pa. expensive kit builders offer a smaller "Merchant's Row" in O scale?  I would go for that, too and can visualize all kinds of bashes, moving around, adding and subtracting 

With all the small laser cutting model companies today pretty simple to get one of them to build what you want if scratch building isn’t your thing.  Even if you like to build, the laser cutting capabilities make replicating a structure much simpler.

i agree with the others, with a bit of effort you can have what you want.

Being the originator of this post, I fully agree with your statement in priciple, but I also add as a matter of practicality -- "But at what cost?"

Not all people who desire a fine looking layout have deep pockets to have structures or parts custom built but rather as a necessity turn to mass manufactured structures. It's unfortunate there are not nearly as many model railroaders into O gauge as there are folks into HO and N. If only there were then many of those structures made in both HO and N scales would also be made for O gauge too.

I agree mass production helps costs, but let’s not forget most of them have 2, 3 or 4 sets of markups before they get to us as consumers (overseas factory, importer, distributor, local dealer) The small companies who sell direct have only one mark up on likely a higher base cost due to volume.

However, you may be surprised at the cost, especially if you are willing to build the kit vs a built up model.  I recently wanted a building to make it into a post office. I sent a simple diagram and photo of what I had in mind to right on track Models, and they made all the parts I needed to build it and provided the injection molded windows and doors, it cost about $75 as I recall.  That is in line with many o scale kits and imported injection molded buildings.  I thought that was very fair, and no need for deep pockets.

Perhaps not affordable for everyone, but I think more approachable than some may expect.

So if you thought you were being helpful by offering laser-cut kit opinions or modular wall designs that approximate a look, thank you. As always, that’s a possibility of which I think everyone is quite aware.

But I’m not interested in either. In fact, despite the fact that I built dozens of buildings in both HO and N scale when I was younger and even some O gauge buildings, I’m like a majority of O gauge hobbyists these days. I want built-up models like those offered by MTH, Lionel, Woodland Scenics and Menards. I might consider quick-build kits, too.

Now I know it’s unlikely either of those companies, or any other, is likely to manufacture either a Merchants Row or Superior Bakery identical to those HO and N scale kits. (Actually, AHM marketed a built-up N scale version of the bakery sometime around 1980.) But whether anyone manufacturer would be willing to make such structures also wasn’t the question.

It’s a wishlist, plain and simple.

Too many O scale buildings now!?  Hey, l have

moved beyond Plasticville. Reminds me of a train show where the dealer said there are too many trains in inventory (there were, and are, models of the same few prototype and roadname re-dos)

Actually, from being in the Steel Mill Modelers Special Interest Group (http://www.smmsig.org)  I've learned that even the HO versions of these are a tad undersized.  Still, translated to O they would beat (particularly for a Blast Furnace) having to scratch-build them.  Aside from the Blast Furnace, the other buildings are relatively easy to scratch build.

I agree with you.  I used to be afraid of scratch-building.  Not anymore.  I'm not particularly good at it, but I enjoy researching, planning, and building my own unique (and prototypical) structures.  We have to face facts.  In O, we are unlikely to find anything out of the ordinary.

In fact, I think scratch-building is easier than these "craftsman" kits.  Many of those are not particularly well documented.

Yes! Almost everything in Walther's Cornerstone catalog, especially the more robust industrial offerings. I'm getting tired of having to scratch build anything that's not a clapboard building on a short line.

Although not made/imported by Walthers, I would Love to see in O scale the Atlas Middlesex Manufacturing kit. That's another structure that could be a good kitbashing candidate!

Big Manufacturing model buildings is what is needed in O scale. Menards is slowly filling that void! ( Morton Salt, Verners Sash and Door, Dakota Cabinet Factory, etc)

 I would just like to see a really big cathedral in O scale.

I like that Walthers Modern Travel Center. It would be nice to see more modern buildings like that or those made by Summit Custom Cuts in O gauge.

The diesel shop would be quite large in O scale built up , like 30" X 36" X 18 tall and then of course it would need to be $49.95 with free shipping .

Modern offerings might be well received, especially with those who don't wish to model 1930-1960. Walthers makes them in HO and N, I bet if they ran some in O, they'd see an increase in business.

I'd be willing to guess that the popularity of the Menards buildings are because of this. Right now, they've got the most "modern" structures out there!

Micro Mark catalog came today ..two pages of buildings, mostly not O.  To answer the question: dozens.  Could ask: how many HO brass rolling stock items  would you like to see in O three rail?..dozens!!

I've always been partial to these walthers kits. As well as pretty much any of there downtown buildings!
