Check out this amazing clip on the future of 3D printing. The speaker asserts that current technology is really just 2D printing one layer at a time... slowly.
His technique was inspired by the liquid machine in Terminator 2.

That was very cool. I had seen something like this years ago that used a laser in a vat of some kind of liquid and always wondered why no one was trying to improve the technique. I guess they were working on it all the time. The next few years will be interesting.

Agreed....that is a game changer...as he said. But as he also said it's not 3D printing but something spun off it. It's a game changer for sure...but as it's at a such early stage....hobby use still way off.
thanks for posting......
I read this article and found this really neat and I think we will see this soon with the way technology is advancing.
3d printing is a game changer, look what Jay Leno did to get parts for some old cars. it is only a matter of time before 3d printing becomes a normal and regular thing for us railroad people.
The time is now here for 3D printing. The new machines are the SLA and DLP machines, both use the liquid bath technique for printing. DLP machines are the projection prints using the same projector home theaters use. DLP projectors have been around for a while so the DLP units are not new tech and very reliable. SLA machines use laser tech and this also has been around for a while. Look at most of your hobby manufactures provide laser cut wood kits. These machines are fairly simple, they are faster and provide print resolution that is unbelievable. These machines are really the same price as PLA machines that feed spools of plastic but incredibly better. Machines cost around $1100 to $3000. The best home use machine provides a build size that you could print out a 55 ton hopper car. You could print box cars and halves or quarters and join them.
Here are the players in the game for home use, the Titan 1 has the biggest print area. You could print out a 55 ton hopper in 3 hours.

This is amazing! Current 3D printing technology is useful but this is a real game changer if it can be brought to fruition. No matter how fast 3D printing gets there will always be the issue of resolution. and strength - this eliminates those problems. Fascinating!
What has to be done first with the high resolution liquid printing is to make figures of people and animals that are highly detailed and exactly 1:48th scale. 3D scanning would help produce the data.
Then scan real items to create digital files to print true to 1:48th scale bicycles, automobiles, and tractors.

Very exciting technology!
3d is making an impact now. Here is Mario Scalzo's pieces used to convert one of my Lionel engines. Yes it takes a little and sanding and filler. Once the weathering is finished it will be a perfect fit. The pics will show how.
