I'm wanting to strip the paint off this metal shell, but I don't know if it's aluminum or some other metal. I have read where aluminum seems to be susceptible to corrosion/tarnishing, etc. with many of the suggested chemicals, powders, etc. found/suggested in this forum. The shell is clearly a die-cast metal, and is quite light in weight, but I guess I don't know when aluminum was introduced into the Lionel manufacturing process. Anyone?

my guess would be tinplated steel, like virtually every thing else lionel made in that era
Never really heard of lionel using aluminum in this time period.
The 262T tender frame/body is cast - ZAMAC would be by guess
diecast zinc alloy same as the loco frame and boiler front. The 261t is the sheet metal tin tender of similar size. I've been using our old crock pot to remove the paint off train part, works great.
@Dennis Holler what a great second life for a crock pot! So what secret elixer do you prefer when removing prewar paint? I can tell you, alcohol simply wasn’t gettin it!
