I would like to verify the accuracy of an F unit model's upper side body grill. If anyone has a scale drawing of an EMD F3 (late), F7, F9, E8, or E9 diesels I'd appreciate knowing what the prototype height was.
you may want to try scaling the dimension from the diagrams the PRRTHS had in their 2 part story on F units. those are accurate drawings. you only need to establish what scale the magazine illustrations are, then compare a known dimension such as wheelbase or overall length.
May be a quick trip to Steamtown with a tape measure. The F7's
F3's
The Reading F7's, the grill appears to be slightly larger than the window openings The Lackawanna F3's, the chicken mesh is a good bit larger than the window openings.
Both appear a few inches above the portal (round) windows.
This gentleman has taken a lot of time and effort to produce these scale drawings in 1:55. The EMD F units have the various model phases. Left and right view. You could adjust from those.
I can find Alaska RR engineering drawings, actual EMD operators manuals and parts lists for the various F units, but no production specifications for F.
