Still has to be the GG1
Yes Terry, a nice looking engine

Either 1666 or 685 locomotives. Although the 2243 F-3's are close too.
I got in on the O gauge scene late via a Polar Express set for around the tree, bought on a closeout in '08. That was enough to get me back into trains, although until then I had never owned any O gauge three rail.
I only have the one postwar engine, a 646 Hudson bought from an infamous auction site. The youngest it can be is 58. It runs like Secretariat and it did so right out of the package! So of course that is my favorite.

I also love the Jersey Central FM

My first; the 1615 0-4-0 shifter.

2330 GG-1 by far...
The 2020 and set I got when I was about 5.
Found a 671 set with original box last year as a substitute and I love it.

2046
For me, it's the 2055. She's taken a lot of abuse over the years, but still outruns anything else I have to run through lots of 027 switches. On the down side, while it's always been easy to repair, my 2055 has also needed the most work out of all my locomotives to keep it running. Currently out of commission due to a broken finger on the e-unit. Finally got around to buying a new trailing truck to replace one that has had the side frame held on with tape for the last 20 years, just before the e-unit died.

The Lionel 2055. I had one as kid and it was stolen but I loved it so much that I replaced it when I got back into trains.

Ah, a bit complicated........going to have a diesel and steamer category. For diesels, I've got a tie between my 2343 Santa Fe F3 dual horizontal growler (ABA set) and.....my beautiful 746 (which not only runs great, but spits out perfect quarter sized smoke rings from it's 60 year old liquid smoke unit).
On the steamer side I'm going with a recent addition......my 1950 773 Hudson. Awesome beast.
Tough to make choices between terrific Postwar Lionel masterpieces.

My 2338 that I had as a kid. But I really like this EP5. Why they never made it I think it would sell.
Glad I have this one it comes in second.
Sorry.....my 746 above is tied in the steamer category with the 773. Put it on the wrong line.
Roger
2046 Hudson. My grandma bought it for my Pap brand new for their first wedding anniversary way back in the day. We put it up for a Christmas display.
I've always loved the Berkshires, all of them, from the early post-war 726 with the smoke bulb and double worm drive to the later 726s and 726rr to the 736. I also have always had a soft spot for the N&W 746 J class Northern. Last year I lucked out and got a 1950 773 Hudson which I'm also crazy about. Oh the heck with it, I love all of the Lionel post-war engines.
Has to be my 2359 B&M GP-9
On the steamer side, I really can't pick one-seems whatever one I am running -of the big ones. Non-steamer it is my 2340 GG1 in Tuscan, bought at a TCA show as an unbelievable bargain. Has run smooth as silk since i brought it home.
Dad bought me a 2046 for Christmas at Trainland when I was 12. She still runs like a champ!
Jon
#624 C. and O. NW-2 switcher.
The 625 Center cab that came with the set I got for Christmas as a child. Still have it.
Gees and F3s are great, but the top is the massive FM Trainmonster...and I really don't care what road either !
That really is a tough one !! All depends upon the type of engine you are considering. From dual motored F3s in the 2300 series, the single motored 2200 series F3s, switchers, Berks, Hudsons, GG1s, any of the steamlined steamers (746), etc...... Lionel made them all great and they run great to this day.
My 2055, my Grandfather bought it for me. I just like the look of the Hudson engines.
2330 GG1
Robert C,
That would be my Legacy Shay, the coolest post war/modern engine ever made IMO!
Eddie G,
Your GG1 is pretty BA also!
PCRR/Dave
671 Turbine!
Ok... I got carried away....... But I believe the point remains.... hard to choose.
Lionel:
Steam: 726, one I have is about 1948; 675.
Diesel: 2245, 2353, 624.
MARX:
666 steamer, with that Pepe LePew smelling smoke in the green bottle!
My 2037 from '57 Catalog.
My 2343 Santa Fe ABA
Favorite, as in SINGULAR?
Hm. Love the steam engines based on the Berkshire boiler as well as the other "Baby Hudson" shell.
However as for my FAVORITE (singular), well... that would have to be the Berkshire. Lionel hit it out of the park when it came to making a burly looking brute that would still go around tight curves. Love their heft, the smell of 'em... all of it.
Shouldn't 'a sold mine!!
Same as my favorite MPC and Modern Era locomotives, the Santa Fe F3 in warbonnet livery.
What, me worry?
The early 675 with the aluminum stack and rubber-stamped number plate on the boiler front.
