Eddie - I got this Stanley 4-in-1 pocket screwdriver, mentioned in the second posting of this topic, for under five bucks shipped free for pickup to my local Walmart.  It works.  The jis set at Grainger probably is better quality but it's ~ $25.

Pete

We just now bought a pair with free shipping on the Bay for $10. Good suggestion.

Its interesting that many people like magnetic screwdrivers. I don't really care for them. I use a quick-wedge screw holding screwdriver for slotted screws, and something similar (don't recall the name) for Phillips head.

I use a lot of different tools when working on trains, It would be hard to pick out one essential tool.

I can say that I am glad I invested in a press and added accessory tools over time. (often a tool specifically designed for one job turns out to be good for other jobs as well)  My only regret is not getting the outfit earlier.
