What Kind of Terminal Block to Use?

I'm in the planning stages of my 2014 Christmas Layout at the Redford Theatre in Detroit. This is my fourth year doing the display and I'm really focusing on wiring everything properly to avoid the minor power bugs I've faced the past three years.

I've purchased 16 gauge double stranded wire for the main feed from the transformer as well as 18 gauge double stranded wire for feeders to the track. The layout is going to be a minimum of 8'x20' this year, and we'd like as many power drops as possible. I'm thinking terminal blocks tapped into the bus line and spaced evenly around the layout will be the easiest way to do things. The layout is built on stage platforms that have other uses in the off season, meaning everything has to come apart and I'd rather not cut wires every year to get the tracks pulled up.

Do you guys have any recommendations for low cost terminal blocks that would serve that purpose?

I didn't even think to look there. I just automatically assumed they'd be more expensive than somewhere online. I'll have to take a trip over to the local shop and see what they have in stock.

Here's a recent thread about terminal blocks. The Euro style will probably be the most economical and crimp connectors (forks/spades) are not required saving a little more. There were quite a few other options as well. Ebay also has many terminal strips and the pricing is usually pretty good form the regular electronics dealers there.

Mini Power Distribution Blocks Needed

I am going to use the MTH terminal blocks (Miniatronics) for my power feeds and the Euro style for almost everything else. I don't personally care for the ones requiring a crimp connector (fork, spade or other type) and I don't care for the crimp butt connectors much either. Personal preference of course, but I have had a bit of trouble over the years with these during my working life due to people not using the proper crimp tools or methods or enough pressure when crimping causing a loose connection. These can sometimes be difficult to find as they can cause intermittent problems.

My layout is not temporary, more permanent, although I will probably be making a few occasional changes here and there from now on until one of us (me or the layout) expires.

I'd go with the Euro style of blocks, myself. You don't need crimp on terminals and the wires can be disconnected and pulled back up through any holes they run through without the crimp-ons getting stuck in the holes.

Just my 2 cents worth..

Online would be much less expensive than the shack. Might have to wait for things to arrive so plan on that type of delay. Usually 7-10 days from China.
