I think that the statute of limitations expired on "leak proof" - that battery must be 60+ years old.

I may be hallucinating, but wasn't there an item in a recent Stout auction which included an original Ray-O-Vac battery that was in good condition (wasn't stored in the engine, thankfully)?

Hope you can restore that engine.

I had a not-so-old battery leak in my vintage Lionel 2343. Apparently the battery had a small dent from being dropped before installation, which eventually leaked. Fortunately it didn't cause any mechanical damage or exterior cosmetic damage. It taught me a lesson about carefully inspecting any battery before installation.

Maybe my imagination, but thought I saw or read of a "battery replacement" power supply (ready made or you build) that created 1.5V power for those bicycle train horns. Imagine  would be diode , capacitor and way to knock down voltage to  constant 1.5V  (el cheapo buck converter?) at whatever current rating horn required.

I thought that the Lionel GG1 used a buzzer sounder to create the GG1 horn growl.  My single motor GG1 had the buzzer when I opened it up.  Did later GG1 iterations go the battery horns?
