Wouldn't it depend on what prototype era you are trying to duplicate, i.e. heavyweight or streamline light weight passenger cars?

I guess I would need both!! Haven't decided which I will use!

Fred

I assume you are talking about the actual Hudsons operated by the NYC.  They pulled virtually everything the NYC had to offer, from the top of the line expresses to lowly mail

trains near the end of their lives.  Here are some photos I took in the early 1950s at St. Louis.  Note that in one photo the Hudson is pulling a Pennsylvania passenger car so anything goes.  If you check out the internet you will find dozens if not hundreds of photos where the Hudson pulls stainless steel coaches, two tone grey coaches, standard

coaches etc.

In that case, if you are looking for the original Lionel product, Jim has answered the question with the Rail Chief set. MTH made a repro of that set a few years back; you can sometimes find the MTH sets on eBay or at train shows for $300-350. Beyond that, any scale-size set of NYC heavyweight passenger cars would be appropriate. IMHO the Rail Chief cars look a bit undersize behind a scale Hudson, but who am I to second-guess Joshua Lionel Cowen?

Fred, Lionel also made a set of Railchief passenger cars in 1990 as part of their Classics collection. I have an unused LN set, with original boxes in that price range of what Southwest Hiawatha says you can sometimes find the MTH set. If interested, just email me (email address is in my profile). Thank you .

Fred, your question has been answered in regard to the model 700E with the tinplate cars.

However for real J1e and J3a Hudsons you will want a set of Pullman green heavyweights. Judging from Al Stauffer's "Thoroughbreds" the un-streamlined Hudsons seemed to pull these the most. Go for Lionel's 2004 or later release of the 20th Century Limited heavyweights, since those offer the most correct combo of Pullman and NYC lettered cars. All other manufacturers only seem to offer all Pullman or all NYC lettered trains, which is not correct. K-Line also offered a very excellent model of the "Pacemaker" which Hudsons would have also pulled.

I just got the K Line New York Central "Canna" coach car to run with my Lionel Commodore Vanderbilt Pullman cars which may approximate the consist for an Advance Commodore Vanderbilt train with one coach car and give a New York Central lettered car to the consist (The Lionel cars are lettered Pullman).  Now if I can only find the K Line baggage heavyweight to finish it off!

Actually, my mistake. I was thinking of the Lionel Classics set when I wrote MTH. It's easy to confuse, since the Lionel Classics were actually made for Lionel by Mike Wolf under contract back when Mike W was a Lionel dealer. MTH may have reissued the Rail Chief under its own name, but the cars I was thinking of were the Lionel Classics. I feel kind of dumb about that, since I was just running a set of them today.
