My layout will have   approx 8 - 10  Lionel older 022 switches, plus 5 K-Line Switches.  I want to power them separately off of accessory power at 14 volts.  And I also want to run some accessories off this transformer.  I was going to buy a MTH Z1000 for this purpose.  Would a MTH Z 750 provide enough power to do this?

Or would an older Lionel work just as well, or better.

Larry,

Since the switches only require power to operate momentarily their only other draw is for the lanterns.  The smallest of transformers should provide adequate power for them.

Power consumption for other purposes really depends on the accessory. Obviously, features such as multiple lights, operating motors and smoke units will draw more than a simple street light.  While there are probably stats on each accessory, it's likely you'll need to play it by ear to see how many you can connect to any one transformer at a time.  I'd be inclined to connect lighting to one variable output...that's the simple part.  Operating accessories generally need fine tuning individually with the voltage but with experimentation can be paired together on variable voltage or fixed voltage taps.  Probably best to mount and wire temporarily until you hit upon the right combo.  Older Lionel transformers should be ideal for the purpose.

rtr12, 14 volts is the minimum test voltage specified in the LIONEL service manual for testing PW 022 switches.  The manual specifies testing at 14-16 volts.  Personally, I would be reluctant to build a layout using minimum specs--Murphy's law.

Of course, I don't know the cost difference or availability difference, if any, among the transformers Larry is considering.

Thanks for all the  replies fellas.  I am going to start with a Z1000 and test the 022 switches and see how 14V accessory power works. If not high enough I will use the controller and main power and adjust till everything works. I may just use  8 of the 0-22 and get some K lines also. They already have LEDS in the switches.  May go to LED Bulbs in the o-22s and switch controllers. I just don't know enough yet.   I'll keep you all posted as I get started.  Thanks
