While working up our promotions calendar for 2024 I stopped and thought, why not ask the experts?

We normally offer a few basic types of promotion:

  • 10% off sitewide
  • Buy two get a third (least expensive one) half off
  • Points multiplier (earn more points per dollar spent)
  • Free shipping on Halloween
  • Get $xx off orders over $xxx
  • 10% off for Private Car members
  • Deeper discounts on overstock items, like buy one get one half off or even free, 15% off, etc
  • Flash sales for SMS subscribers

What are your favorite types of promotion? Obviously we can't give away product for free and keep the lights on, but I'm curious to see what type of promotion or discount would be your favorite.

Shucks Scott, you killed my first suggestion before I got to make it!

"give away product for free"

Maybe you can find the TMCC/Legacy electronics that Lionel seems to have lost and offer them for sale, that would be one of my favorites!

I’ve been attentive to the various discounts Trainz has offered over the past years. They don’t all apply to the current chapter I’m at in my operating/collecting journey, but I appreciate them nonetheless. I’m to the point where there are just a few dozen specific motive/rolling stock pieces I’m searching for, so I’m checking Trainz every day to see if they pop up in the Preview Items section.

Discounts/sales and services that would grab my attention would be for:

**Engine/Electronics Repair**

**Custom Painting/Road name changes**

Gargraves track/Ross Switches

PostWar Lionel motive units & rolling stock

Modern transformers/accessories

Scenery (all of it)

O scale vehicles

O scale figures

O scale steam locomotives

O scale rolling stock

Shipping

…and offer shipping on some of those used 28+” O scale manual turntables instead of pickup only (yeah I know it would be a bear to pack)

Thanks for asking, Scott – all of my hobby purchases are online, and at least half of those purchases are from Trainz – please keep those pre-owned items coming!

I have two thoughts:

1) Partnerships with Content Creators: continue/expand your excellent work with content creators on platforms like Instagram and Youtube. Perhaps, a week of promotions specifically around content creators, a fun competition of some sort etc?

2) Integration with Train shows like Amherst and York: Discount and free pick up at shows. Not sure if this would work logistically, but it would be cool to order online and pick up at a show.

Hi Scott,

Here's my two cents worth. Maybe in the end, you'll find that's all it's worth!

Could you offer additional savings on a certain manufacturer every month (with some exceptions, of course), or a particular road name, or perhaps a particular type of train or rolling stock, etc. It wouldn't have to be much either. Maybe a few bucks off on shipping or some other idea that won't end up costing you a lot of money.

Since I have an automotive background, how about accepting pre-approved trade-ins from your customers for something they'd rather have? As you know, many people phase out of certain items for a variety of reasons, so they're looking to liquidate some things. Many people either can't, or won't sell at shows or on-line, so this would be a way for you to obtain new inventory and for the customer to trade for something he wants while thinning down their current collection.

To increase your email list of customers to send new product availability to, perhaps you could hold a drawing for all new contacts you receive within a certain time period to let's say a gift certificate or anything else you deem appropriate.

Finally, since you advertise in many forms of different media, you could offer a special tracking code for a small credit off a customer's minimum order. This is also a good way to track where your advertising dollars are being used most effectively. For ads that don't generate a pre-determined amount of traffic, you can drop those ads and spend that money in current or new advertising.

Maybe you're using some of these ideas now, or maybe you tried them earlier only to find they don't really work for you, but I've found these low-cost methods helped my business grow. Best wishes for continued success. Thanks for all you do for the hobby.

These are some great suggestions! Don't be surprised if they start popping up on the site.

And as an FYI, we offer free York pickup for orders. We announce it via newsletter about two weeks ahead of time, with a cutoff date so it all makes the truck.

Make sure to sign up if you haven't already! We'll be announcing the pickup window for York in early October.

Add a "Make offer" button or a "want it gone" discount on items that sit. Some of these things drop in price $10 at a time or whatever for months and never go. Some are probably wrongly priced, or they're door stops/parts fodder to the right guy at the right price. Either way, I'm sure they take up shelf space that could be cleared out for something else.  Add the ability to offer a price (surely you can program a price floor to auto-reject $1 offers and what not), or have a sale every month where these things are 20+% off and see how many go.

Buy one engine, get one free of greater value? A guy can dream!

But, I like and agree with  @Boilermaker1 with the "make offer" for a product that has been in inventory for some time. Surely it might be better profit than when you auction it on ebay?  I'm sure you could set up the program to accept a minimum offer of what Trainz would need to make a profit on.

I really like the free shipping and $25 off after minimum of $150 purchase.

Stay in your lane Donnie!, …..if there’s to be any freebies, I stake that claim!…

🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣

Scott I was a big fan of your auctions before they went away, but still a big fan of Trainz. While your promotions are good, my buying criteria now consists of picking up several items on a single order so that average shipping is about $5 per car. With the current system I watch many items at any one time waiting for them to fall into my buy range. What happens more often lately is by the time the 4th item is in range one or two sell off resetting the clock resulting in "no sale".  Perhaps the make an offer would be reasonable if there were multiple items in the mix. You potentially save on transaction costs avoiding 3 or 4 transactions with a bulk sale.

Or how about a commit to buy but have 3 or 4 weeks to pull a larger order together, kind of like the old lay-a-ways.

This Trainz thing ruined me. I kept buying. Great deals. Wife got mad.

Grandson just came over last week and tried to run every engine I have. He was here for days, but failed to run them all!

I just expanded the outdoor layout from stuff that was bought years ago.

Anyways, I like the service and had to stop buying as I ran out of room. It wasn't for any other reason. (.... well $$ too )

Thanks again Scott!

Just don't tell the Mrs.

I may have just ordered more Split jaw ss track clamps..... another deal!

Like others said...

Make offer button.  Sometimes I just wait on and item and watch you drop the price a few dollars weekly.  If it sells before I buy... Oh well another one will be around soon enough.

Lower the minimum for free shipping.  $150 would be nice, $100 better.

Thanks for what you do however.  I am searching your site almost daily for new stuff.

Ron

@Scott@Trainz, apologies for going off topic, but when will the N. Lima Trainworks inventory you acquired appear on your website?

Also, my compliments to your entire operation: items listed for sale are well-photographed and described; items are carefully packaged and shipped promptly; and arrive without issues. Very neat and tidy operation. Thanks.

As for promotion, hook-up with the American Red Cross and offer a $10-$50 discount (depending on the price of the item) for a blood donation. They're equipped to provide verification that would not be burdensome administratively and you'd get plenty of free promotional marketing.

Maybe a permanent 10% code for OGR members? (Like how trainworld has in the magazine).

The make offer button is a pretty cool idea.

Also the free shipping at lower value would be nice... even $250 would help (it's hard for me to justify buying more things to get me to 500, vs 250 I may pick something up just for free shipping).

Thanks

For me, I like it when you offer a solid performing, conventional , low-frills diesel or steam loco, normally in the $200 to $250 range, at a deep discount price.

I have been lucky enough to buy these types of deals around Christmas time, but it would be nice to see a few scattered throughout the year, perhaps on other major holidays, and I would definitely buy more.

For example, not everything you offer at Halloween has to be orange and black.  Throw a few other good deals out there.  :-)

I love Trainz! I want you to keep your lights on.
A couple months ago, my last order with you was for 10 items, which shows how important you are to me. But the order was just a little over a hundred dollars, which shows that I am not a big spender. If it were not for a promotion that you were offering at that time, the shipping would have been prohibitively high.
I like the idea of free shipping to York, but that only helps customers in the Northeast. My local division of TCA has a big train meet in Northern California around March, but that is too far for you to travel. How about a new idea... offer free shipping to local divisions of train clubs with a cutoff date and all orders shipped to one address for distribution at the next club meeting.

How about a better discount for private car members than the standard $1-3?

It's actually 5% these days. I'd say it was about a year ago we bumped up the earning rates on points.

A Private Car member earns points at 5x per dollar spent on the order subtotal. So a $300 order before tax and shipping would be (300 x 5) 1,500 points. Yes, it doesn't discount the purchase you're making right now but you're earning a discount on a future purchase.

Points are pretty popular everywhere... But truthfully, it's just one more thing for me to track and remember.  Just like Amazon offers free shipping for paying to be a Prime Member, I would seriously consider signing up for your Private Car membership and pay a monthly or annual fee to secure free or even deep shipping discounts.

I'm interested in the best overall price for my item today, not points I may receive some discount on in the future.

I would like to see a bigger presence at Amherst.  Maybe sign up to the new Large scale show at the Big E.  More and new inventory.
