28072 was the separate sale j3a. The 38041 was only offered in Lionels 31705 50th anniversary passenger set.

Pat and others can confirm  but I believe no class lights , and boxpok drivers make the 38041 more prototypically accurate.

If your concerned at all with sound. Each has a different NYC style whistle . The 38041 being a lower tone.

Rick is correct, no class lights would be correct for both J3a’s…….by the time the J3’s were on the roads, the Central had adopted a much better train control system,  thus negating the need for class lights ….the driver saga is one that has been and can be debated over again, as the discussion never gets old,….but again,  Rick is correct, as delivered from Alco, both models by Lionel would have been Boxpok equipped, …..not to say drivers were often swapped around, sometimes mixed as the need arose,….
