I have a burned coil on a PW Lionel 675. I am planning to try my hand at rewiring it. What size wire is best to use?

Measure the diameter of the wire on it and just buy enameled wire that matches the wire you already have.

Is it the kind of thing that could be upgraded, are there ones with a "better" heavier gauge wire, or is it best to use whatever gauge wire is on it?
Actually more is not better. It would be best to replicate the original winding count and wire size.
Wire size is #23, 0.0221" in diameter. 166 turns, six layers. Resistance between 0.9 to 1.0 ohms. I would be interested to hear how it got burned up. Damaging a field coil is fairly unusual.

Thank you David. I will need to look at it more closely. I got this engine off ebay and the smoke unit and E unit were not working. I removed those and wired it for forward running only. Maybe I did something wrong, or the old wires are problematic, but something got hot and I could smell burning, and it died and there it some charing on the field coil wiring. I will post pictures when I get to looking at it again.
You want the same specifications for the wire. The motor was designed for a specific number of turns at a specific wire gauge, so I wouldn't stray from that. The tricky part you will find is winding it neatly enough for your wire to fit, at least unless you're a machine.
