Assuming you mean for smoke: Postwar Lionel smoke pellets.
Assuming you mean for smoke: Postwar Lionel smoke pellets.
That would be my vote as well.

Yes smoke pellets are the least annoying.
Smoke pellets for me too.
Though, I use nada and eliminator in my modern stuff. I may have to try the smoke pellet sent some day.
MMMMMMMM Bacon.....or is that what my Lizzy (Beagle) should be saying.

I have been responsible for a few smells from time to time. But we are discussing smoke fluid scents here, right? I like cedar. Which I believe is the original American Flyer scent.
I bought the diesel and coal fired steam and yuck! Dumped both and reused the bottles/droppers. One of them smelt like burning rubber tires. Nothing against JT's, I run quite a variety of their scents exclusively. I've since learned to always stock the big bottle of NADA to "water down" an extremely strong scent, which of course is a very subjective argument. Now I know trains smell like diesel/coal, and that the train room prototypically should not smell like sitting in the laundry room, but my wife has a say in train odors.

JohnB; if Lizzy has access to your layout, I would not suggest JT's Frying Bacon

Look, I am a Lionel and MTH guy but I have always lusted after postwar American Flyer smoke.

MTH Christmas tree (or scent?) and Mega Steam Eliminator year round.
I actually prefer JT's NADA. It does smell -- it is not completely odorless, but close.
There is no smoke smell I really like, although I'd be tempted to try if JT comesup with a Lab Vindaloo one . . .
I don't "smoke", bothers my sinuses so I have unused pellets and some old Marx liquid of some sort.

Our tomcat was sleeping next to the layout the first time I tried the bacon scented smoke fluid. He woke up, his nose just a twitchin'! I just knew he was going to jump on the layout. To my surprise he jumped up and made a beeline to the kitchen. I followed him and he stood there by the stove begging for some bacon and nobody was there cooking any! He looked so confused. LOL
My sense of smell has mostly gone away, so I don't bother with scented smoke fluid. I used to use the coal smoke one for steam engines, but every time I ran a steam engine with it at the museum somebody would come up to me and excitedly announce that my engine smelled like it was on fire. When that bottle ran out I switched to Nada.
I like all of the Mega-Steam Christmas Seasons related scents. The pine and bayberry smell wonderful.
There is a reason why it is called Mega Steam....more smoke that I have ever seen. I like the bayberry the most...

Does JT's Cedar smell like the 1960's Flyer smoke?
I need to get some Eliminator. I was running the PE the other night and the basement stunk for 3 days. I have been using Nada. Tried some Forest and Stream last year. I was told it smells like Febreeze. The bottle smalls like it, what comes out the stack does not.
I like the Hot Chocolate scent so much, I run it all Winter!
My favorite is the smoke pellet scent but I'd like to try the nada just for kicks.

Coffee & donuts. JT's Megasteam coal fire.
I tried some new ones this Christmas: Maple Sugar, Cinnamon Roll, Candy Cane, and Christmas Pine. I wasn't overly impressed with any of them. Maple and Cinnamon Roll were okay, but Candy Cane didn't really have that much scent at all for me; if anything it was kind of acrid and unpleasant. I didn't try Christmas Pine, but I will.
I still fall back to Apple Harvest, Vanilla, and Hot Chocolate. I also like coal fired steam and diesel, but those get disparaging comments from the wife and kids. I also really liked MTH's 'Christmas' scent, but it never ran real well for me for some reason - I was always blowing down the stack to break that bubble that always seemed to be forming.
But since it's about train smoke scents, my vote also goes towards smoke pill scent, another I like is MTH's "apple pie" protosmoke scent.
I've been using the newer Lavender Dreams scent in my new (pristine) smoke units and really like it. I'm avoiding using any other scent in the new engines. I'm also beginning to think too many varieties of scents in my collection is more of a curse than a blessing! I'm not even sure Eliminator will eliminate the witches brew mixture that have resulted in some engines. Probably easier to just replace the unit wadding and start again fresh. Another suspect is charring of the wadding due to running hot. Once you get that burnt smell, I think you are stuck with it unless you replace the wadding.

nada and eliminator
not interested in that froo-froo stuff.
In my opinion, the Megasteam Cedar is less intense than Supersmoke original cedar (made by Barts Pneumatics) and that is less intense than the original Flyer smoke formula.
Does JT's Cedar smell like the 1960's Flyer smoke?
Nope, its smells like Cedar.
You have to find the American flyer smoke... there was manufacture that was reproducing it... forgot their name....
Jebb's is the best performer. I really like the food smells...
Hot chocolate
Candy-cane
brewing coffee
hmmm frying bacon....
now I am hungry....

Eliminator and vanilla scent from Mega Steam.
I love the Hot Chocolate scent when I'm running my Polar Express, but for regular running, I like the fruit scents - Grape, Apple, Cherry, Peach, Orange - followed by "Forest & Stream", "Spring" and the wood scents. There are a number of the scents that I haven't tried yet, so these preferences may change.
