What to do instead of ballast?

I use gray roll roofing material....It works for me, if you can find a damaged roll at Lowes or Home Depot you can usually get it at a discount....it would probably look like Nova-cork. I also use it for ties, 2 pieces for O Gauge 1 piece for o-27.

PS It's easy to cut with a utility knife from the back.
