I got one of those as well. Very exciting. My wife got me a static grass applicator and assorted grasses. She also got me a box of small assorted hobby tools such as exacto knife, nippers, files, pin drill, sanding blocks, etc. Handy stuff.

That Hakko will be one of the most useful tools you will have from now on.  As many others have said I don't know how you enjoy the hobby as much without knowing how to solder, and having a nice tool with which to do it.  My humble suggestion, go to the "big river" site and order an assortment of tips including a pointed one.  You will need them when you get comfortable with the Hakko and the large variety of jobs for which you will use it.

WRONG THREAD!!!  Are the moderators paying attention???

Obviously, this should be in the "Bought anything cool lately" thread.

Ha ha ha and lol! Looks like a car for twenty-somethings or mid-life crisis guys.

Just wait β€˜til you’re into your seventies. Then you’ll appreciate cars you are able to just get right into, like the Lexus RXs, rather than the stoop-down-into fast cars like Chargers, Corvettes, and Cameros.

BAAAA  HUMBUG  VERN .

This is most likely MIND over Matter Vern.       Once you are behind that tachometer and the long skinny pedal the memory of how you got there means nothing .

(  that's a Challenger Vern. )

Again, lol, Joseph. Oh yeah, a Challenger, the Vanishing Point (1971) car. They all look the same to me, now. But thank you for the reminder.

TedW - Thank you for the encouraging words about the Hakko FX-888 - Where and what is the 'big river" site ??? - I will be needing more tips I'm sure - Do you have a favorite chisel style tip you use ?

Thank you again

@dorfj2  Here are the tips I have from a variety pack.  These are just my choices.  They may not work for everybody.  Hopefully, others will chime in with the tips they use.  The 4 tips on the left of the photo, I use most.  Especially the bottom left T18-CO5 which I use for 0603-1206 smt leds and resistors on small lighting pcbs.  I also build the DIY passenger car lighting module with the others.  But you may get some ideas from this selection.  One important fact is I have not used this solder station for track.  Most members advise to use a higher wattage iron for that task.  Most important is use it!!

This is a bit of a late Christmas gift, but my mother surprised me today with this beautiful framed lithographed print originally done by Angela Trotta Thomas around 1994.

It apparently also has signatures by Angela herself, the late former owner of Lionel Trains Inc. Richard Kughn, and Neil Young.

I can’t tell 100%, but they look real to me. Regardless, it’s still a fantastic piece of art.8FABFF56-D0A6-4223-B8D0-8CEDDAE6C0F3AB67975A-50B6-4F4B-9F8D-6F2ADF155ECF137212DD-8718-4919-B6DF-4C170339EA8C6ABBA6BB-167F-45AC-9108-9936932EF200

Strictly non-professional art opinion,  I would expect it to be true, since it has Angela’s name on the print, and signature on the print.  This is common for artists to sign prints.  I would not be surprised, if the other signatures were also valid.  Either way, it is a nice to have.  Great Christmas present.

No problem Vern.

We all need a little help remembering things as these years go by .

(  not to worry though .....a friend of mine was worried about his not remembering as much as he thought he had to and purchased a book to help himself........in the preface it stated that the things we remember are the things that are most important to us.        He closed the book and continued on with his life .

Manhattanville and Harlem Trolley.   It's a fun addition for me.  I didn't even know Manhattanville existed.  The trolly provided transportation to the Polo Grounds.  It goes well with my 155th street subway station.  My Dad's office was right next to the Polo Grounds on Bradhurst Avenue.  When I was a a kid I could walk out and peer through the stadium slats to sneak a peek at the game.  The trolley is a stroll down the pleasant memory lane.

Late on this because of the need to sort out and rearrange my shelves.

First of all, I did, in fact, get a C6/VG- Flyer Sesquicentennial set from 1926 or maybe even the unnamed version of it from 1925.

SQ set

I also picked up a later 4042 Observation car which was sometimes added to this set.  I am a little confused, thinking it might even be a 4152 because it has gray trucks.

4042

Now, here's a nifty thing:  the name of the observation car is Pleasant View, and the name of the Pullman is America, but this Pullman is litho'd incorrectly:  it has America on on one side and Pleasant View on the other.  Hardly a valuable situation, but certainly a conversation starter.

PV - AM NFPV - PV NF

I also got some other goodies, some of which came in my stocking.  They include a C7/Exc+ #69 Crossing Bell, and C7/Exc+ #77 Crossing gate, a #20 90 degree crossing, and a #81 Rheostat.  All these pieces came in a single auction lot for about the cost of any one of them.

Stocking Stuffers

All in all, the trains please me greatly, and I am looking forward to putting the new varnish to work hauling eager Christmas travelers in style.

I do apologize for the poor quality of the pics:  lighting and composition are pretty difficult in a crowded living room still hung with Christmas.

While it's not really a train item, I do have a number of WW2 planes that at sometime did see time on the layout (mostly hanging from monofilament) and I received this item:

jet

It's a Dragon Warbird Series Me262

Not many can lay claim to having a model of the worlds first operational jet fighter on their layout. Not sure how I'm going to work it into the whole train thing, I really don't have the room to set up even a small airshow type of vignette or even a small airfield for that matter. Plus its 1/72 scale so if anyone has any ideas let me know.

My wife gave me railroad patterned curtains (she made) and tie back hooks (made from rail spikes) and a new lighting fixture for the train room.

She also gave me some train themed stickers for my water bottle, beer fridge, etc.

From my brother I received an atlas 62' bulkhead flatcar.

And with Christmas money I picked up a Menards vetter sash and door from my LHS.

Finally, I guess these count for Christmas, the two Lionel ttx graffitied husky stacks I pre ordered showed up.
