Bought this engine & tender - 30 years old but never run. Had it greased, oiled, and test run - all good. My understanding is that this was employed in NYC passenger service only. What would be a good (o gauge available) set of cars to put behind it? Thanks.

What make is the engine and is it scale or railking/Traditional That will help lots as to the size of the cars that would look best
Nice looking engine :-)
any NYC cars streamline or madison coaches 60" or 70" long.
Suggestion: Search "New York Central Passenger Train photos" or something similar and you'll find plenty of appropriate prototype photos.
Green Heavyweights would be best. K-Line, MTH, and Lionel all made them with and without figures. If you model post 1950 than any type and color version would be appropriate.
Pete
Back in the 50's you would have put a set of Madison cars behind it. That would have been three cars. Today about six to eight 18" heavyweights would do the trick. Williams are probably the least expensive followed by MTH.
You have a Lionel 1990 scale Hudson made in the USA.

It is, of course, a 1990 Lionel 1-700E J1e (5340). Essentially a re-issue of the 1937 scale 700E J1e (5344), with improvements. Michigan-made. Pullmor. 1:48 O scale. I have one. Capable of good running, but not as "creepy" or powerful as a modern can-motor loco. Mine will pull all the cars I ever ask it to.
Heavyweight and/or streamlined NYC passenger equipment. Mixed or not. This loco deserves scale or "scale-shortened" equipment.
These locos ran from the mid-1920's through the mid-1950's, with fewer and fewer "fancy" assignments. They also hauled freight, especially later in life, and I have seen a couple of photos showing Hudsons on work trains right before the fires went out and they were all scrapped.
Appreciate the replies all. Thanks.
I love that loco! I run mine with Lionel Lines Madison cars from the same era.

K Line made a heavyweight 5-car set called the "28th Anniversary" set. They are lettered for New York Central, and are the same color as the postwar Lionel "Irvington" cars, but they are 18" long each. I run this set behind my Lionel 5340 and it makes a great-looking train. It's a great blend of old Lionel colors with m9dern scale length and details. And, they will run on curves as tight as 31".
I have a set plus an extra car available in new to like-new condition plus an extra car. If interested, send me an email.
A mail and express train would work.
But almost as pedestrian as a work train.
As it has been said...NYC Heavy Weights is my vote! Nick
A NYC heavyweight passenger consist is also my vote.
New York Central Madison cars (detailed interiors of course!), but I'd definitely add a NYC reefer car or "through baggage" car just behind the tender too. If nothing else but to add some contrast to the consist.
As a ferroequinologist, I imagine you're doing some fishing here. You own lots of NYC equipment, so I wonder what you're really looking for, Michael. Seems like you should be able to tell anyone what is and isn't appropriate for the Central? Just wondering...
It depends on if you want to run a realistic or fantasy consist
Realistic - named passenger train, un-named passenger, mail train, etc.
Fantasy - 3-4 Lionel Madison style passenger cars to match the sets of the 1950s
Michael, Only you can decide the 'best consist'. What may look good to you and be half way realistic could be a train made up of cars which you purchased individually. As mentioned, most of the four and five car sets are fantasy. Not knowing the size of your curves or the lengths of your straights, kindly permit me to suggest a generic combination which at one time or another possibly ran on NYC tracks. One REA express car or a mail storage car(or both), an RPO with the soft end forward, one or two heavyweight baggage cars, two or three coaches, a dining car, two to five sleeping cars and an observation car. Your choice, nothing is engraved in stone. John in Lansing, ILL
I chose this one (as did the fellow who bought the locomotive and passenger cars from me), but you already may know because that locomotive pic is from my website.

All are in great shape, been in the box for several years , in my garage. Do not think they have ever been run.
I bought them used and put them on the track to be sure the lights worked. The person I bought them from (forum member) did not remember ever running the cars.
When I bought them (second set) , plans were to purchase the Gray VL Hudson ( I have the black one, with the same cars) but before finding the Hudson at a good price the VL BIgboy was released and nuf said on that.

I have updated my contact email on the forum. I was unaware that I still had an expired one up so thank you for that. I DID send you an email as well as I am interested in getting more information on your equipment. Thanks....
