I want some track plan opinions, sketches, whatever you have for me. I'm finally at the point where I can start building. This is what I have 11 x 16 feet. I deferentially want a U shape track plan and one level. I would like to run 2 trains at once one a main line that has sidings for trains to park on. A yard of some type. I'm using realtrax with 42 curves. I bought the track before I researched more. I would put 54 or 72 curves if needed.

I'd do the following:
- Do a sketch of the room with measurements of the overall room size, and wall measurements of door openings/intrusions and window positions.
- Figure out the direction you're going with your train purchases -- i.e., do you think you'll be getting something that requires 36" radius (O-72) or larger.
- Figure out if you want industries and how many, coupled with the need to have a continuous run.
Depending on intrusions into the room/area, 11x16 will support O-72 curves. Remember that to date, nothing has been produced in 3-rail that won't run on O-72 (appearance aside).
Might not be what you want to hear but if I'd strongly suggest going with wider curves, if possible.
I realize space is somewhat limited but you'll probably want bigger curves somewhere down the road. It's much easier to do so now.
Even 0-54 is a big improvement over 0-42, IMHO. (As Matt alluded to, 0-72 is a great idea.)
Just for laughs and grins, I threw this together for the space you indicated. As you can see, you can squeeze O-72 curves into your space. I opted for Ross 11-degree turnouts as they're better suited for sidings.
