Well, I am not sure anyone knows the answer although I am sure it has been posed here on the Forum before. I once did a trawl through old MTH catalogs to see when LED-equipped cars were first issued and it turned out to be relatively recent, like about 2014 (from memory). There, that's my opening bid and we’ll see how fast it’s shot down!
2021
I researched the UP premier passenger cars last year. I know this to be accurate for the UP cars.
This is based on catalog info:
2015 were incandescent bulbs.
2016. They didn't make any UP cars
2017 and forward are LED's.
First mention in the MTH catalogs is 2015 Volume 2, which puts delivery sometime in 2016.
I have the Strasberg cars, and the LED lighting is a bit lame. There is no capacitor, so they flicker worse than incandescents! I added a capacitor to kill the flicker, why MTH didn't do that totally escapes me!
You can search some 2016 cars on the MTH website to find out about them.
I have the 2015 N&W; they are incandescent. My 2016 Santa Fe are LED.
Thanks guys!

And they will now!
My Alaska RR passenger cars from the 2015 Vol 1 catalog had/have incandescent lighting. I still have pair to convert to LED.
