Just picked up a few old Weaver PS-2 Covered Hopper kits, only to find they don't come with trucks or couplers. Looking for an economical option for compatible truck/coupler solutions. Pretty sure standard Lionel trucks won't work, as they'd sit too high mounted on them.

It sounds like you are in 3 rail. In 2 rail, Athearn trucks work well, they cars were designed for their height.
In 3 rail, there are some "low-slung" lionel trucks. I found some on some cars I converted to 2 rail. They have a real low bolster and the couple is on a raised tab. I think they may have come off the last run of GLa hoppers, but not sure.
You might look at MTH 20-89022 or 20-89023 for trucks and couplers for these cars.
Weaver offered three-rail trucks and couplers, these show up in various auctions frequently.
Bad move.
Should stay away from all Weaver until someone picks up the MTH replacement trucks which are sold out now. Original Weaver trucks are long gone unless you want to pay the high price today from a few hold out sellers. Trucks cost more than the cars, not worth the effort or trouble to bother with.
Another bad situation the 3R O hobby has experienced.
There's a pair of "Bettendorf" Weaver trucks/couplers on daBay right now for $20/$6 s/h.
The other Weaver truck pairs I found there tend to be in the $30+ range. Trucks never were the cheapest parts, but will tend to get more expensive as more brands die off.
We're down to, what, three?
Thanks guys! I swear I searched ebay yesterday for "Weaver Trucks" and didn't find anything under $30. Didn't know MTH had made trucks for them as well. If I'd known it would cost more for the trucks than for the "kits", I'd never have gotten them. Oh well, live and learn!
Weaver 3-rail trucks were done two different ways. Most models came with cast wheels and plastic truck frames. The die cast metal trucks and wheels were an add. A Weaver truck on a model caboose, I've been working on.
The better wheels. The set comes with a three rail coupler assembly also. The #10 Hex nut was added as a spacer.
You may be able to find the plastic frame trucks at train shows, there were a lot of after market replacements, IMO. I have a couple of sets of the MTH truck. Problem is: The truck screw is applied from the top down, which involves opening the model. I could be wrong and often. Mike CT.

Yes. Searched for "Weaver Trucks". Nothing recent came up on the first page of results, so figured there wasn't much point in going further. The forum search doesn't appear to have much rhyme or reason to how it lists results. Now if someone had said "Hey, I've got some listed in the for sale forum", I'd have been able to include their username and might have come up with something. Not sure the reason for the cryptic hints and deleted replies, but it certainly didn't help me find them.

Contact me off-list. I was helped out by a forum member (thanks Clem) and I am honor bound to help out another forum member. I'm pretty sure I have a pair lying around.
FWIW, while a little pricier, the Lionel trucks that they put on the LionScale cars are a perfect fit for Weaver cars as well. They're not sprung, but they work.

The MTH Weaver trucks do not have a top-down screw mount. They have no threads on the hole, and mount by using a #2-56 screw into the body of the car. At least, that's how every pair I've bought worked when mounting to Weaver 3-bay hoppers.

FYI- Mike, cabooses didn't have Bettendorf trucks.

Thanks, waiting to see if Matt has more than 1 set available. Would have replied sooner but it seems I managed to get myself banned from the forums over the weekend. Tried to add my email so that it was publicly available, and the forum software got it in its head that I was unverified, or some such thing. Alan fixed it up for me, so I'm back in business!
