Pt tender? Standard tender? Curious to see how the loco looks with some of the streamlining off.
The "full blown" ESE hudson and tender is too frilly for my tastes

I'm the opposite, the ESE HUDSON is the only Hudson I like with stream lining. With that said mine won't show up until next week.
That mercury looks great D500!
I prefer a more "workhorse" look , not so "fancy" if frilly is too odd.
Lionel having released this ESE j3a, it seems a rerelease of the unstreamlined version from '02 is becoming more and more unlikely.
I considered one of the recent MTH j1e's until I heard it. They look great, but.....
My k line heavyweights continue to sit on a shelf awaiting head end power.

I had my eye on MTH 20-3581-1 to possibly head up my GGD 8-car ESE passenger set. Did you not like MTH's sound file?
My alternative is the Lionel model w/PT Tender. I almost snagged it for a super price today at Henning's New Year's Eve 15% sale. However, the locomotive wasn't yet at the store to be eligible for the discount. Too good to be true. (But I still took advantage of the sale for something else! )
Since the GGD aluminum finish is different than that of Lionel's ESE passenger cars, I'm using the PT Tender as a buffer between the brighter silver trim of Lionel's ESE locomotives and the GGD aluminum car bodies. The regular tender would have been too much of a mismatch. I will post a photo in January or February of the loco w/PT tender along with a GGD car or two.

David... You should just go for the SS 3rd rail ESE hudson. There are a few on the bay in excellent condition right now at reasonable prices due to the fact that the lionel ESE hudson just came out. I own all 8 GGD cars and the SS 3rd rail ESE hudson. It has incredible detail and good enough sound. It's worth taking the hit on the sound quality for the added detail and the fact that it matches the GGD cars perfectly. It is by far the best model of this engine available in 3 rail O scale. Also it still has cruise and 4 chuffs per revoloution. Look at my YouTube page for a video of my set running.
Don't get your hopes down Rick.
I didn't think Lionel would even reissue THIS engine, but I got my wish. Same when they did the Vision Line 700E.
I mean, the fact Lionel made the Empire State version with the unstreamlined J3A tender still might be a sign the full unstreamlined Hudson might be in sooner than you think. Guess we'll see how 2016 Volume 1 turns out.
The fact of the matter is that the J3A, and the Niagara for that matter, is one of the few engines people DO WANT to see reissued.

+1 what John says David. As you can see the 3rd Rail engine handles the 8 cars with ease and there is no comparison in the detail department. Full working baker valve gear and working lubricator linkage to name a few.

Gentlemen, thank you for the tip. The crux of it is I'm not a super big fan of the ultra-streamlined look on steamers, yet I also wanted a somewhat unique locomotive for this train. So I like the fact that the PT tender offers more detail and a larger, more visible coal load. And the main loco body is unique enough to make a statement for this train.
Hmmm... Decisions... Decisions....
For those who've purchased Lionel's ESE set OR separate-sale locomotives, does the locomotive crewtalk/towercom dialogue make reference to the train name, Empire State Express? Is there anything unique about the dialogues for these locomotives? Or did Lionel dumb down the dialogs in their usual "generic" way for non-VisionLine locomotives?
Thanks!
David
I'm also wondering how popular the Lionel versions with non-uniform drivers will be. Were these from "later era" years when railroads didn't care as much about appearance vs. "just using whatever parts were available to get the job done"?
Looks odd -- but also intriguing as well.
David
I read somewhere (can't remember where) that the nyc was having problems with cracks in the scullin drivers and changed them back to boxpoks.
Maybe resident nyc/steam experts can confirm or deny.

Don't get your hopes up David. This is the current product line we're talking about. The new Heavy Mikados have the generic CrewTalk, so I'm pretty sure this engine will get the same treatment. If it did, it likely would just mention it's road number.
I guess that's what the StationSounds diner is for. Go figure.
