After having a few problems with my new Legacy Santa Fe Northern cab 3751, it finally started running fine, on its own. While on the last stretch of track completing once around the double main track, and heading to the yard to drop of the 20-car train it had picked up, it quit running.

The track was the same where the train had been. The locomotive apparently hit a small bump and I made a note to check for ballast in that section. A second or two later, it  blinked as if there were a bad connection or obstacle on the track, and after another second or so it blinked again and shut down. I manually pushed it a foot or so further along the track, but it made no difference. I tried to restart it where it was, but it would not.

I picked it up and set it (with its tender) on another stretch of track, and it started and ran fine. So I repeated every step, starting with the engine travelling to the yard, then backing up to pick up the same train from the same track, and take it for a ride around the same main. It ran great all the way - no problems.

When the train left the yard, I looked at the section of track where the engine had bumped onto something, and had shortly thereafter shutdown. The track was clean and there was no ballast out of place, but I found this part (below) laying on top of the center rail such that it protruded very little – cars could go over it without problems.

I looked around and under the locomotive, as I suspect that is from where the part came, but could not find its place. I looked at the cars, and could not find any tale tales of its location.

Does anyone have an idea where this part belongs? (the mount plate, where the holes are, is 0.318" x 0.557" and 0.026" thick)

Don,

I looked at the cars that were there before the engine went through, and that part definitely does not belong to any of them. Next, which engines have I taken through that track? Not many, actually; but I looked at three with no luck.

Perhaps I'll just chill out a la Alan & Keith , put the part in a special 'homeless box', and let it go a that.

Thanks!

Alex

Dennis -

Yes; there are tell-tale bolt head imprints on the 'inside' of the plate; i.e., the side opposite to the side that can be seen in the picture above.

Alan -

Yes; the part does look like it could belong on a car.

BigDodgeTrain, Chuck -

Those are good ideas, and no; I have not found or looked for screws. I'll rig up a car with a magnet and go screw-hunting!

THANKS!

Alex

This keeps nagging at me like I've see it before.  As I study it, it appears it may be a clip to hold something else i.e. the screws hold it tight while the tab end fits through a slot to hold on something else at one end like a lid that would swing up into a retainer on the other end of the lid or object.  Look above and see if you have a light fixture about to fall down.    The fact that it is black though, makes you think of trains.

Well, don't think so. I checked my MTH GP-20, look totally different, plus the body hold it in place. If it shows signs of screw marks on the other side, it would have to point up, as it couldn't point down, it would hit the rails. Could have it possibly come from the  box? I know some Legacy engines have retainers as part of the packing to keep the loco/tender from shifting in the box.
