Mitch, You never cease to amaze me with your inventiveness, ingenuity, and imagination. Amtrak never had it so good. . With the new camera you might not need the flash indoors if there is enough light.  By the way where are your assistants?

I think Mitch needs to move to Long Island. I found the perfect spot for him.

Mark,

Your story is so similar to mine I thought I wrote it!  Probably more than a decade ago there was an article in MR about detailing rolling stock.  The article began with a photo comparing a stock Athearn boxcar with one that was finely detailed.  Of course the reader was supposed to be drawn to the detailed model and the "realism" it presented.  But to my eye, the stock model with its chunky detail appeared more realistic!  I tried to stare at the photo and convince my self otherwise, but to no avail.  That event began my transformation, solidified a few years ago when I noticed OGR at the local bookstore and learned about the Hi Rail concept.  In my Hi Rail world caricatures of prototype trains rein (MTH RK, Menards, etc).  To me, they are as or more realistic looking than anything I tried in HO.  While I don't fully embrace whimsy as much as others, its fun to know that part of the hobby is included under the tent.  I say bring it on and a hardy well done on the Amtrak steamer!  As to the lightning stripe GG1, the only way to improve on that is with silver trucks!

Remember the foofaraw when Walthers offered Conrail steam engine decals and AHM offered a Conrail steam engine?

Mitch

I have that one, the previous owner painted over all the conrail markings!

But, it doesn't look like that anymore.  Moved the headlight up, painted it black and it is now Western Maryland 4-6-2 #203.  Still have a way to go, but it officially started to look like it should today.
