Here's something I got and it just says GP model on the box.
It's a K-Line made by New Ray with a part number K922-003 G scale. How do I tell if it's a GP38, or 40 or ??? Got dynamic brake fan section right? Three fans on the rear with the small one in the middle. It has bad axles and the gears are cracked. I'll need to check out the Lionel version before I buy it to see if it suffers from the same issue??

If it has three fans on top of the cooling system hatch, but the middle fan is smaller than the other two, it probably is a GP35. Next check for the exhaust stack out let, a turbo unit will have only one rectangular outlet, right behind the cab. The "roots blown" models (GP38) will have the two smaller outlets, on either side of that dynamic brake fan.
There's just one exhaust outlet. there's another area in front of that with just a smaller hole? Maybe for an optional sound system adjustment or something.
