Greetings to all:

What are some of the steam locomotives that you members have had the opportunity to be on a train pulled by it?  Myself, I have been to Garabaldi, Oregon with the Heisler #2 twice, a small ride in Portland, Oregon with SP&s 700, and the July 3, 2011 run to Wishram, WA with the Daylight #4449.  Hot Water if you were fireman that weekend please let me know.  Can't wait to see what you all have to say.

I've rode on all 3 locomotives at the Strasburg Railroad, as well as their version of Thomas the Tank Engine. Plus No. 60 on the Black River Railroad and no. 142 on the Bel-Del Railroad.

A couple years ago, as a birthday gift from my parents, I was allowed to ride in the cab of No. 40 on the New Hope & Ivyland Railroad. It was hot, sooty, and smokey, and I loved it.

Yes, I was a Fireman on 4449 that weekend.

It was Great to Meet Gordon Zimmermann that day and hear stories from him while stopped in Wishram.  I will forever say that Doyle starts and stops that lady (4449) so smoothly it is amazing.  Hop I get to meet you the next time you head out to Portland, sir.

The UP City of Los Angles in the winter of 1948 pulled by 844 and 2 diesels.  We got stalled in the mts west of cheyenne with one diesel puked out and could not make the grade.  Backed up to Cheyenne and got 844 on the front as the helper.  The conductor was really nice to keep me up to date as to what was going on.  I was 5 years old at the time and I remember asking him if we were going to pulled by a double engine (my term for big boy) and he said that it was going to be a big passenger engine number 844 and it would be coming by my window in a few minutes so I could see it.  I was already a train nut then and had up calendars with up steam on them so knew bout the big boys.  The conductor also told me to watch out the window after awhile as there would be a big boy on the waiting alongside with a long train waiting for us to pass. Sure enough it was there sitting on a long track on a slight grade.  That was great excitement for me.

Rode the NYC from Haarlem on hudson first week in August to Syracuse NY { yes right down Salina street] then changed to milk train with steam helper to Ogdensberg NY. 1941 thru 1948 was only 2 yrs old in 1941 but remember the rides  to  vacation in Waddington and help with crops harvest on a horse powered farm in Lisbon NY. Best memories ever, includes train slowing down to pickup water on the fly, whole train shook but never stopped. Then returned 2 weeks later

My first steam ride on main line steam was in May 1964 when the CB&Q celebrated the 100 anniversary of suburban service between Chicago and Aurora. The highlight of the trip was the class O5A 4-8-4 painted in GOLD, RIP!

Other steam throughout the years was a main line execution behind GTW pacific 5629. Several trips to North Freedom Wisc. on several different engines. A family trip to Wash where we caught a ride on the Northwest Railroad Museum 2-6-2, Jamestown Ca on the Sierra RR #28 a 2-8-0, and a couple other museums out west.

Several trips down to Felton Ca on the Roaring Camp and Big Trees. Most recently, I was engineer for the day hauling the Dixiana, a Shay, up and down the mountain. Being behind the throttle and pulling the whistle cord was one of the biggest thrills I have had.

Since I was bon in 1942, as a family member, I rode behind steam on the PRR and Central RR of New Jersey. However, limiting to "riding behind steam on main line excursions", here is what my memory comes up with:

1) PRR K4sa #612, on a "fairwell to steam" out of South Amboy, NJ (1957?).

2) Reading RR  Iron Horse Rambles, behind T-1 #2124 (1959?).

3) Southern Rwy, #4501

4) CB&Q O5b, #5632.

5) Grand Trunk Western #4070.

6) Clinchfield RR 4-6-0 #1 (without diesel help)

7) Southern Rwy #610 (former T&P 2-10-4).

8) N&W #611 and also #1218.

9) UP #8444/844 and also #3985.

And of course, AFT 4449/SP 4449 since 1975.

Tourist lines such as the Georgetown Loop, Virginia and Truckee, Strasburg, Boothbay Maine, etc, etc.

But, the all-time best was a trip with my grandmother on the Long Island Railroad around 1950 to visit an uncle in Northport. We made the famous change at Jamaica for steam. Being 4 years old at the time, my engine ID skills weren't developed yet, but I would guess it was a G5 4-6-0.

Best part about the trip was an engine breakdown which led to us being stuck on the platform for hours with nothing to do but watch a parade of trains, all pulled by steam, go by all afternoon!!! My grandmother was worried that we would never make it home, but I didn't care and hoped the day would never end!

That turned out to be my one and only trip behind regular service mainline steam.

I've done several of the usual suspects: SP 4449, Milwaukee 261 (several times), and CP 2816 "Empress" 4-6-4 (double-headed with Milwaukee 261).

In the early eighties I had a short ride behind NP 328, a 4-6-0, and just in September this year rode behind (literally - the train was pulled backwards on the outgoing leg, and I was in the last seat of the observation car so only a few feet from the engine) D&NE 28, a former Missabe 2-8-0.

Most unusual was a 2' gauge 0-4-0 back in the 1990's. It was built in an occupied Polish factory by the Germans during WW2. A fellow in Northfield MN operated it with some home-made passenger cars on a loop of track in his (rather large) backyard, as part of an annual family party / reunion. Sort of like a really big 'garden layout'.

When we visited the uncles in Thornwood and Pleasantville we rode the New York Central's Brewster Local.  The electric motor got changed out for, as I recall, a beat to crap Pacific in North White Plains.  Dad used to hop us off the train to observe the change over because he knew even then I was train crazy.

We also took a train I believe was called "The Fisherman's Special" from Penn Station to Montauk.  I remember we had to get up really, really early and that at some point the locomotive was changed from electric to steam.  It was a really great trip because most of the time that train was smokin'.

These memories, though "ancient", are still extremely vivid.

Also saw the Flying Scotsman when it toured the US in the 1970's as well as the Reading T-1 made up in Freedom Train colors.

Interesting to try and remember.  I rode behind most steam locomotives as a younger child.  As far as I can remember:

Former PRR D16sb on the Strasburg before it went across the street.

Steamtown's Royal Hudson when Steamtown was in Bellows Falls, VT.

Steamtown's Baldwin 0-6-0 in Scranton

I think that's all of them.  Never been on a steam hauled train other than excursion lines.

I knew what you meant, but if you had used the same words in a different order it might sound better.  Which trains pulled by steam engines have you been on?  Got a tad transposed perhaps.  Anyway, the only train I've been on pulled by a steam engine was the trip to the Camp 5 logging camp by Crivitz, Wi. when we used to vacation up there.  That was pretty neat.  And the mini at the Milwaukee Zoo.  Not much of a resume, but I'm not dead yet.  Cheers.

I also find it interesting nobody here has mentioned Frisco 2-10-0 1630 at the Illinois Railway Museum. IRM also has J Neils #5 which is a Shay which used to operate in years past and on which an operational restoration is being completed. IRM also ran Tuskegee 2-6-2 101 years ago.

I did.  About 10 posts up.  Plus the Shay, the 101 and the long-idled Commonwealth Edison 0-6-0 #5:

Like Fred, I have distant memories of the last European working steam. In my case it was my local  branch-line 0-4-4T in the early 60s. The train was usually just one car with compartments only, no open car or corridors, and I found out not long ago that the very car was preserved in a museum. Must get there sometime for a look and maybe find the window I had to p*** out of when I was three years old......

Back in the early 80's, I rode on one of the steam trips at Strasburg, but have no recollection of which engine pulled that trip. I also rode on a few Steamtown excursions when it first moved from Vermont. The engine was done up in (I believe) CP colors, but I don't think it was a CP engine. The most memorable trip was on a July 4th weekend when two teens were where they weren't supposed to be and were hit and killed on the way out to Moscow.

Finally, back in the late 80's, I rode behind the Royal Hudson (CPR 2860) from Squamish to Vancouver. That was one beautiful engine. I'd love to get a model of that one some day.

In revenue service:  ATSF 4-8-4 (1952)

In excursion service:  ATSF 4-8-4, MILW 4-8-4

In tourist service:  2 Classes of ex-DRGW 2-8-2's, two Maine 2-footers

We went to Tennessee to ride the inaugural trip behind ex-SOU steam engine that was freshly rebuilt, but last-minute decision that the engine was not ready for service caused us to ride behind NS Southern Heritage GE diesel.
