hello all. the parts came in from lionel for my k line ESE loco. smoke lever fixed. also took out that fiberglass batting in the smoke unit and replaced it with cotton and now she smokes like a champ. the issue I'm having is the whistle blows randomly. whenever it wants. its very annoying. i spend most of the time running the engine with the tender unplugged because of this. do any of you know why its doing this? the loco is equipped with TMCC but I'm running conventionally. could this be why? i also noticed the smoke unit works better when theres a lot of volts going to the track, but i don't like running at that speed. is this because the smoke unit will benefit from the constant 18v supplied to the track if i were running with tmcc?? any help is greatly appreciated as always.

Yes, the smoke unit is made to run best at the 18V of command operations.  It will always be weak when you run conventionally.  That is the nature of TMCC locomotives.

As for the whistle, try placing a lighted caboose or passenger car on the track with the locomotive.  I'd start with it right behind the locomotive and see if that solves it.  If so, then try placing it at the end of the train.  Still happy, then you need a "magic light blub" to clean your track voltage up.  You can either always run with a lit car (Which is what I do.) or install a light powered by the track somewhere.
